Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) will make her SNL hosting debut on January 19 alongside musical guest Greta Van Fleet, who are nominated for four Grammys this year including Best New Artist and are a polarizing topic on the Music Board.

Rachel is a great and funny actress. I hope the writers can come up with some good material to take advantage of her talent.

Yeah my biggest gripe is that they seem to try too hard to be like other bands and not their own. I enjoy them tho

I love how the body of this post focuses on the host, not the musical guest.

I'm glad she's hosting. She's a great actress. I'll probably FF through Zoso cover band.

My exact sentiment. I think they went from a band that just so happened to sound like Zeppelin to a band that tried to emulate everything about Zeppelin. I think they got told they sound like Zeppelin so much it got to their hands. It's a shame, but I still like their music.

Call Greta Van Fleet derivative of Led Zeppelin and you'll get no argument from me. Rush was called derivative of Led Zeppelin as well. But calling them a cover band is just dumb. They don't play Led Zeppelin tunes.

Of course, musical taste is subjective. But there are a lot of ways to objectively measure a band. Did they write their own songs? Did they record those songs without the aid of studio musicians or engineering frickery? Can they reproduce that sound live without the aid of touring musicians or backing tracks? Do they improvise during live performances?

Greta Van Fleet are talented young musicians. Here's a live performance of Lover, Leaver (Taker, Believer) from a few months ago. The bulk of this performance is improvised. It takes enormous talent to pull that off.

Right now, I agree, granted, the Struts have been around WAAAAAY longer than Greta Van Fleet and put out far more content.

I'd say they're probably a better option than 99% of what's been booked on SNL over the past 5 to 10 years.

Thats false. SNL still caves and frequently has pop trash and rap acts. But they still grab a handful every season way better than GVF

Off the top of my head just in the last couple seasons theyve had

Foo Fighters
Father John Misty
Jack White
Paul Simon
Kacey musgraves
Arcade Fire
Sturgill Simpson
Chris Stapleton

Rush may have been influenced by Zeppelin but they always had their own distinct sound. You know a Rush song instantly from the opening chords.

Yes Rush is instantly recognizable now, after 45 years of radio play. But back in 1974 people thought Working Man was a Led Zeppelin song. The same criticism of Greta Van Fleet was being made against Rush back in 1974.

quote:

Trio serves up a dose of good hard rock highlighted by the often Robert Plant-like lead vocals of Geddy Lee and the powerful guitar work of Alex Lifeson and solid drumming from John Rutsey. Good material here for AM or FM play. Only complaint might be the strong similarity to Led Zeppelin, but this cannot really be considered a complaint when one examines the success Zeppelin has and does enjoy.

I’m very out of he loop on these guys. My understanding is they have a Led Zeppelin sound? Give me a good song to start with.

Safari Song - Greta Van Fleet

First one I heard.
Sorry guys, I love it. With all the crap music out there, these guys do a reasonably good job carrying the Zeppelin torch.
In a world of bro-country and Nicki Minaj, Greta Van Fleet is not the enemy.

I can't see how RUSH could be confused with Led Zeppelin. They are very different styles and sounds.

Maybe he should post the reference to the first album again. They were repeatedly called the "Canadian Led Zep" in rock mags at the time. It is a pertinent comparison in that Rush developed a different sound over time as is obviously the hope/theory that GVF will evolve in a similar way.
