Was listening to Metallica in gym this morning and I was thinking, as massive as they are, none of the members are even in consideration or discussion as one of the best in their individual discipline.

Are they the biggest band like this? That not one of the main members is considered a top 10/20/50 of their own discipline?

Vocalist
Lyricist
Guitarist
Drummer
Bassist

I suppose you could argue Peter Buck but I never see him mentioned in guitar player discussions. In any event, they are the best example to me of the whole being better than the sum of the parts

I mean, James did at one time have the best Right hand in all of Metal. And he was definitely top 10 stage presence for Frontmen.

Maybe I've never paid attention, but don't remember ever seeing him high up in guitar lists. Yes, a great rhythm guy, but always thought he fell in the 75-100s on any list.

I could be completely wrong though.

KISS.

As much as I love them, only Ace Frehley could be considered best guitar.

Who are we comparing them to, all musicians or just metal? Cliff Burton is certainly top 10 bass in metal and probably all of rock. Robert Trujillo is really good too. I would have Kirk Hammet top 10 lead guitar and James Hetfield possibly number one rhythm guitarist in metal.

You are leaving out the most important discipline: songwriting. They have been very good at it.
Probably the best in their genre.
I'm not really even a fan, but I recognize how well their songs are usually put together lyrically.

All

Inside of metal they are obviously upper in their individual disciplines (well maybe not Lars) but they are massive and known cross-genre but member wise, you rarely see them on any of the general “Top” lists.

I like Metallica, well at least their stuff prior to the 00's for the most part, but it was just on my mind after the 2 shitty best of lists that came out the last few weeks.

Look at who's making the lists and how everyone always complains. Those lists are usually biased towards older bands, even older than Metallica. You shouldn't put too much stock in them.

I’m not, but generally you never see them up there, hence the question.

Just posing for debate.

They popped into my mind first, as well.
I would add for consideration:
Fleetwood Mac
The Pogues
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

This is a really bad take, my friend.

James Hetfield has long been regarded as one of the greatest rhythm guitar players of all time.

Bassist Cliff Burton and guitarist Kirk Hammett are highly regarded, too.

Some call Hetfield and Ulrich the Lennon and McCartney of heavy metal based on the classics they’ve written together.

Paul and John aren’t considered among the best lyricists? Or vocalists?
