I'm gonna go ahead and call bull shite on that, because a 14% change in 6 months on such a fundamental, age-old issue is just incredible in the true sense of the word.

Two things that are irritating about this song:

He makes sure to tell us in the very first verse that he is not gay. If being gay is no big deal to him, why does he insist on making sure we know he's not?

Why does he call out the right-wing for being anti-gay? His audience probably has more blacks in it than church-going evil Repulicans. Anti-gay hatred and slurs run rampant through the black culture. They are the ones listening to his songs, he passed up an oppurtunity to address them.

It's because the black steeple followed Obama. Now if he could just come out against welfare as a lifestyle.....

That song sucks, regardless of the message or lyrics.

Are we really calling Thrift Shop a good message song? Sure theres nothing negative in it and there are some positive thoughts in it, but nobody is really paying attention to the message in that song. People listen because its a catchy pop song.
Not to mention how hypocritical that song makes him, since he doesn't really follow the message in it.

I just heard this song the other day too, would not listen again. I don't ever listen to rap but I've seen this guy on tv before and he seems like an enormous douchebag.

Singing about your beliefs is forcing an agenda? That's news to me.

I mean if you want to call it a "gay rights" song I guess you can. If you actually listen to it a few times I take it as more of a "people in general rights" song. People are different, no need to hate them for that sole reason.

ETA: in the first part of the song he's talking about thinking he might be gay because he liked to draw. It's not explicitly about gay people's rights. It's about embracing what's different about people.

I listened to this track two or three times before even realizing what the lyrics regarded.

I still listen to it, now that I know the rest of the story.

Point is, lyrics mean less to me than sound and rhythm.
