Might be my all time favorite. I remember watching this live as a Freshman at LSU in Power Hall. I think this was America's introduction into grunge.
Nirvana - 1992 MTV Music Awards
Reasons this performance sticks out:
Pseudo intro of Rape Me before playing Lithium.
The famous bass toss by Krist.
Impromptu stage divers...camera men didn't know what to do.
Dave was banging his drums like a madman.
At the end, Kurt smashing some speakers and Dave calling out Axl.
Overall, I think the quality of the performance was awesome. They sounded and played great.
What you got?

Ryan Adams & The Cardinals - Everybody Knows (Letterman)
Nothing outrageous, just a good song, and the use of an electric guitar throughout, rather than acoustic, makes it sound so good.

LINK ]Elvis Costello - Saturday Night Live (1977)
quote:
When the Sex Pistols were unable to appear on the show as planned, Costello and his recently formed band, the Attractions, got their big break. They were supposed to play his single “Less Than Zero' but only a few bars into the song, Costello put a stop to it. “I’m sorry, ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “but there’s no reason to do this song here.” At that point he and the band launched into “Radio Radio,” a song that takes a jab at corporate-controlled broadcasting.
Saturday Night Live producer Lorne Michaels was furious. According to some reports, he raised his middle finger at Costello and kept it up until the unapproved song was over. Costello was banned from the show for nearly 12 years.

Good call! I remember that show and at first I was like who TF is this guy? (I had never heard of him.) But by the end I was a fan.
The reason for the middle finger was that Costello was specifically told by the network not to play Radio, Radio.

Blind Melon - No Bidness
When you get tired of everyone asking you to play No rain, you play No Bidness and have a blast.

EC's first (and nearly last) appearance on SNL would've been my choice as well - here's Elvis giving his own account of the incident to Tom Snyder on NBC's Tomorrow show in 1981 (segment on the SNL bit starts around the 4:30 mark).
The entire interview, which includes performances of "New Lace Sleeves" and "Watch Your Step", is worth watching.

I remember reading that they didn't want to perform here, but their label made them do it. These dudes really didn't give a frick.
Here's another memorable performance on TV:
Whitney Star Spangled Banner

Great pick.
Ryan Adams and The Cardinals - What Sin Replaces Love (Henry Rollins Show)
I love the slow, bluesy (almost an Animals - House of Rising Sun type sound) to the heavier guitar solo.

RHCP at the Super Bowl was probably the highest profile exhibition of this.

It's too late- Derek and the Dominos
The only footage of this band in existence. Live on the Johnny Cash show, early 1971.

Talent Show - The Replacements
1986 International Rock Awards
Westerberg knew they were gonna censor the "feeling good from the pills we took line", so he added a surprise or two near the end.
Round Here - Counting Crows
