The beginning stages of the Doobie Brothers found them as more of a southern rock band with hits like "Long Train Running" "Jesus is just alright" "Listen to the music" and "Black Water". Their lead singer at the time was Tom Johnston. He would sing with the band until he had ulcers in his throat.

After Johnston's departure, the Doobie Brothers enlisted the help of Steely Dan back up singer, Michael McDonald. The band would take a different musical route that would be labeled as "Yacht Rock", we know it better today as Adult Contemporary. Songs like "What a fool believes" "Takin it to the Street" and "Minute by Minute" would garner large radio play and acclaim.

So Music board, I ask you, which do you think is better? Doobie Brothers with Michael McDonald, or without?

This is such a hard question to ponder considering Michael McDonald just rules in general.

I'm inclined to agree...I think "What a fool believes" stands up to any of their previous works...Plus, McDonald brought in an entirely new spin on the band with his powerful voice and talents on the piano/keyboard

But it is very close, for me

I know it seems like a lay-up type question for most, but I was more looking to see if anyone on the music board had a firm opinion towards one or the other, and why they held that opinion.

The Doobie Brothers were fun before Michael McDonald became the dominant person in the band. They were kind of depressing after.

Without. Michael McDonald brought a new dynamic to the band but to me, he completely changed the style of music they played. Without Tom Johnston, it just sounded like a completely different band. Not bad by any means, but not the Doobie Brothers.

Without, but they made some good tracks with him.

The Doobie Brothers are as good as anyone with the exception of Pink Floyd, NIN, and Ween.
