An essential characteristic of rock music was that it was big, filled big spaces, drew big crowds, commanded big pop culture movements

Why is that essential?

Ive been into hundreds of rock bands over the years that didnt find that essential.

Methinks OP considers Poison the pinnacle of rock music.

Nobody has the attention span to learn musical instruments anymore and why would you when you can press the space bar on a MacBook and call it music

But rock music may be dead from a popularity standpoint.

here's a few newer/bands that never get talked about here headlining arenas and large amphitheaters
Sleep Token (they're actually headlining Download Fest in England for 100,000 people and have a sold arena tour booked in Europe)
Bad Omens
Bring Me the Horizon
Falling in Reverse

also some older bands that just recently moved up to arenas/large amphitheater headliner
Deftones
Papa Roach
Mastodon
Lamb of God
Gojira

just below that level, bands that can regularly draw 2,000+ people
Ice Nine Kills
Turnstile
Knocked Loose
Lorna Shore

Again this is just a small sample of bands hard rock/metal bands that regularly draw large crowds. There's plenty more You won't here these bands on top 40 radio and they don't sound like The Beatles or Led Zeppelin so most people here wouldn't be into them but they are all very popular. This is before we even get into more mainstream stuff.

Is genuine music dead to the younger generation?

Why is hip hop not genuine? Why would interweaving hip hop into other genres not be an innovative progression in the advancement of music?

Rock has brought in elements of hip hop for ages. Go back to Aerosmith and "Walk This Way" or the wildly popular Linkin Park.

But to answer your question: there's WAY more distinct music being produced now than ever in history. The issue for accessing it is that you have to find a niche located in a small space online, typically on social media. You have to go out to local shows to discover bands because the whole "radio star" model has been codified to what is most profitable for recording and distribution industries. That's probably why hip hop underscores the composition of mainstream music: it sells.

Black guy here....I'm tired of rappers and rap. Would have been nice to have someone sing or a rock group come out at halftime instead.

Rock still exists but not in much of any culturally meaningful way currently.

the best guitar rock being played today is by Sturgill Simpson and his touring band

Rock exists but it is ignored by the record companies and the charts. If you're in rock today you have to self-produce.

Record companies and the charts are only interested in rap. They even want to turn country into rap.

Been that way for close to 20 years now.

Sturgill is great. Really want to see him live. Jack White's album last year was rock.

There’s plenty of great rock music being made. Especially if you go to festivals and local music spots.

Current bands I like making great music today:
Iceman Special
Neal Francis
Eggy
Galactic
Billy Strings
Goose
Samantha Fish
Greensky Bluegrass
Marcus Mumford
Honey Island Swamp Band

Why would you feel the need to tell us you're a black guy?

It’s also a lot cheaper and easier for a label to promote and send on a tour a pop star or rapper. Theres almost always just one person to promote and far less equipment to send around on tour.

Even in the 2000’s the biggest bands always had that one person usually the singer that the label would promote way more.

Linkin Park had Chester Bennington
Fall Out Boy has Pete Wentz
Paramore has Hayley Williams
