Kinky Friedman called Garth Brooks the anti-Hank. A very apt description.

I kinda like him, but agree he was the catalyst that started the sharp decline.

I DOWN VOTE Garth. I remember when he first started and thought to myself, this dude is a clown. I will go on to admit that he had a lot of fans and made shite load of $.
He was the first sign of Cancer for country music.
RIP, Hank,George, Johnny and many more.

Country noise has always been soulless. Garth just made it more popular among the redneck populace.

When did you transition? How painful of a process has it been for you?

Unfortunately,it's easy to come to this conclusion,if you only listen to the radio, and are less than 50 years old.
That's part of the point,:when did the separation begin, away from the old great stuff,to the pop stuff?

Waylon Jennings said Garth did for country music what panty hose did for finger-fricking.

I think Toby Keith started the bro country music. Every song anymore mentions alcohol, girls, or tractors

If you can't hear the blues that run through traditional country music, I can't help you.

Thankfully most pop-rock professional musicians can appreciate and enjoy it.

John Denver, Ronnie Milsap, and Glenn Campbell got the ball rolling.

To be fair to Denver, I don't think he really ever saw himself as a country music guy. He was more folk than country....soft rock.

Milsap ....I'll agree with you

Campbell was a talent especially as a picker and he used to fill in for some major rock acts in the studio, but yeah, I see your point

I think it was a bit before him that started making country cheezy. Maybe that shi^^y band-Alabama.

...but he certainly didn't help matters. he swung around on ropes.

I also remember when he would fake acting surprised when that other turd-Billy Joel would walk out on stage to perform some shleppy song with him.

Stupid bastards.

add in Kenny Rogers, Olivia Newton John, Crystal Gayle. Even Dolly had some really pop songs in the 70s.

It amazes me when people think pop-country started in the 90s or 2000s.
