Ceelo’s verse in “I Refuse Limitation”

Well I woke up this mornin with the same frustration from situations like these
Got a call about some work from one of them temporary agencies
No high school diploma or any college degrees
I can't enlist but they'll draft me if there's a war overseas
Oh please
Of course I can slice some OZs
But see I'm one of those aspiring MCs
And uh bills are due so at times I'm doubtful and everyone disagrees
But I'd rather struggle on my feet than to live on my knees
So my uniform tight workin all night at Mickey D's
Got about 90 dollars and some change after the government
Get they fees
These minimum wages ain't enough to feed my babies
Purposely these limitations on black folks opportunities
So I quit cuz I'm tired of being one of those overworked
Underpaid employees
Stop carin at all went on and did a few small burglaries
It seems like my faith done turned into forgotten memories
And I ain't gettin away with nothing because I know He always sees
But see right now I need to see how I can get this here dope sold
I done stuffed in my pocket as many rocks as it can hold
They gonna get high so I'm gonna get my money even though it's freezin cold
Now how many times you done heard this story told?
Believe it or not, there's some very intelligent junkies
But dependencies is eating away at they souls like disease
Anyone can turn into somebody who covets and envies
Unequal economics can easily make you some enemies
And the crime rate never drops so the cops ride around in threes
I knew he would have killed me if I did anything but freeze
They found the rest of the dope in some nearby shrubberies
In a dimlit room being questioned by these authorities
And they gave me some time in correctional facilities
And now my woman's gotta take on a man's responsibilities

The Hold Steady will always be underrated as far as I’m concerned. Craig Finn has a singspeak vocal style that’s probably off putting to some, but man, is he a great lyricist/storyteller.

The Hold Steady - Both Crosses

She says sometimes she sees these things
Right before they're happening
Hail Mary, full of grace
Some nights she swears she feels her face

She's known a couple of boys that died
And two of them were crucified
And the last one had enlightened eyes
The first guy he was Jesus Christ

Hey Judas
I know you've made a grave mistake
Hey Peter
You've been pretty sweet since Easter break

Now she's 4am and she's wide awake
She's shivering and smiling
Let's clutch and kiss and sing and shake
Tonight let's try to levitate
You Catholic girls start much too late
Baby, let's transverberate
Baby, let's transverberate

She saw all the footage right before it got cut
She saw all the bodies and she saw all the blood
She saw the angel put a sword in his side
And baby, that's how we got canonised
She saw him gushing blood right before he got cut
She saw them put a body in a bag in the trunk
She saw the guys coming in from the sides
And baby, that's how we get energized

She said, "You know I'm down to pay for it."
She said, "Just grant me some indulgences.
'Cause I've been mostly dying and I've been mostly coughing.
And I've been mostly crying and I've been thinking about both crosses."

She saw the film right before it came out
At first she thought Judas might go for the mouth
And she saw the nails and she saw the hands
She saw the crowd, she heard the band
The new kid begged them not to do it
And Jesus just said, "Hey I still love you Judas"

Since you've been up in Massachussets
I keep dreaming about dos cruces
I've been thinking about both crosses
And I've been dreaming about dos cruces
Yeah, I've been thinking about both crosses

I have but only one upvote to give. Had I another, this would have earned both.

Here’s one equally worthy and thought provoking.

Perhaps the single greatest musical number in the history of animation.

Ripple-Grateful Dead
Dead haters or those that never understood the Dead usally focus on the noodling while missing that their songs are wonderful stories with interpretive lyrics. This is especially so for Robert Hunter songs.

Story on Robert Hunter / Grateful Dead lyrics

Ripple Live

If my words did glow with the gold of sunshine
And my tunes were played on the harp unstrung
Would you hear my voice come through the music?
Would you hold it near as it were your own?

It's a hand-me-down, the thoughts are broken
Perhaps they're better left unsung
I don't know, don't really care
Let there be songs to fill the air

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

Reach out your hand, if your cup be empty
If your cup is full, may it be again
Let it be known there is a fountain
That was not made by the hands of men

There is a road, no simple highway
Between the dawn and the dark of night
And if you go, no one may follow
That path is for your steps alone

Ripple in still water
When there is no pebble tossed
Nor wind to blow

You who choose to lead must follow
But if you fall you fall alone
If you should stand then who's to guide you?
If I knew the way I would take you home

Do you realize - flaming lips

Not sure about that one but you reminded me of another song by them that I really enjoy the lyrics to.

The Flaming Lips - "Fight Test"

I thought I was smart, thought I was right
I thought it better not to fight
I thought there was a virtue in always being cool
So it came time to fight, I thought, "I'll just step aside"
And that the time would prove you wrong
And that you would be the fool

I don't know where the sunbeams end and the starlight begins
It's all a mystery

Oh, to fight is to defend
If it's not now, then tell me when would be the time
That you would stand up and be a man?
For to lose I could accept
But to surrender, I just wept and regretted this moment
Oh that I, I was the fool

I don't know where the sunbeams end and the starlight begins
It's all a mystery
And I don't know how a man decides what is right for his own life
It's all a mystery

Cause I'm a man, not a boy
And there are things you can't avoid, you have to face them
When you're not prepared to face them
If I could, I would
But you're with him now, it'd do no good
I should have fought him,
But instead I let him take you
I let him take you

I’ll add:

Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

He stopped loving her today - George Jones…

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by

She still prayed upon his mind

He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then

He still loved her through it all
Hopin' she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962

He had underlined in red

Every single "I love you"

I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

Ya know she came to see him one last time

Oh and we alll wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind

This time he's over her for good

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

In a little while from now
If I'm not feeling any less sour
I promise myself to treat myself
And visit a nearby tower
And climbing to the top
Will throw myself off
In an effort to
Make it clear to whoever
Wants to know what it's like when you're shattered
Left standing in the lurch at a church
Were people saying, My God, that's tough
She stood him up
No point in us remaining
We may as well go home
As I did on my own
Alone again, naturally
To think that only yesterday
I was cheerful, bright and gay
Looking forward to who wouldn't do
The role I was about to play
But as if to knock me down
Reality came around
And without so much as a mere touch
Cut me into little pieces
Leaving me to doubt
Talk about, God in His mercy
Oh, if he really does exist
Why did he desert me
In my hour of need
I truly am indeed
Alone again, naturally
It seems to me that
There are more hearts broken in the world
That can't be mended
Left unattended
What do we do
What do we do
Alone again, naturally
Looking back over the years
And whatever else that appears
I remember I cried when my father died
Never wishing to hide the tears
And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
Couldn't understand why the only man
She had ever loved had been taken
Leaving her to start
With a heart so badly broken
Despite encouragement from me
No words were ever spoken
And when she passed away
I cried and cried all day
Alone again, naturally
Alone again, naturally

Usually love songs are really basic and sweet but I love the lyrics in this one.

Lady May - Tyler Childers

I'm a stone's throw from the mill
And I'm a good walk to the river
When my workin' day is over
We'll go swim our cares away
Put your toes down in the water
And a smile across your face
And tell me that you love me
Lovely, Lady May
Now I ain't the sharpest chisel
That your hands have ever held
But, darlin', I could love you well
Til' the roll is called on high
I've seen my share of trouble
And I've held my weight in shame
But I'm baptized in your name
Lovely, Lady May
Lord, the wind can leave you shiverin'
As it waltzes o'er the leaves
It's been rushin' through my timber
Til' your love brought on the spring
Now the mountains all are blushin'
And they don't know what to say
'Cept a good long line of praises
For my lovely, Lady May
Now, I ain't the toughest hickory
That your ax has ever felt
But I'm a hickory just as well
I'm a hickory all the same
I came crashin' through the forest
As you cut my roots away
And I fell a good long ways
For my lovely, Lady May

Father and Son - Cat Stevens

Just watched the final episode of Ted Lasso with my 17 year old. When Father and Son played, it hit me pretty hard. It's always been one of my favorites, and it really changes as your role with your father...and eventually your son evolves.
