What are some underrated bands that never made national notoriety?

I nominate Railroad Earth. While yes, they are well known in their "segment" (jam band fans), most people across the board don't know who they are.

Listen to a couple of clips below when free.
Do you agree?
Disagree?
Who would you nominate?

Railroad Earth - Mighty River
Railroad Earth - Storms

Railroad Earth is one of my favorite bands going but I would agree with you.

The Wood Brothers...very underrated. They're nothing short of incredible but don't get much hype, which is fine.

Not a band, but it has always baffled me that Iris Dement isn't more popular. I know she's not really making new music, but she wasn't that popular when she was making music.

Saw Wood Brothers and Railroad Earth at Hogs in different years. Was impressed by both. While same genre, very diff bands (one has a flautist) but really thought Wood Bros stood out the most.

With the Wrens, you can say "how you leave out" any song. So great.

Yeah, Railroad Earth differs from the standard classical bluegrass groups. They have a unique New England - Vermont like sound (I know they are from New Jersey).

Can you point me to a good Wood Brothers album or a mix of 5 songs that one (not just the biggest hits) must hear?

Best prog band out there right now. Insane to me how they haven’t exploded after the last 2 albums, and the bonus of getting to be the house band for Portnoy’s DT tour.
