Knowing many struggling musicians personally, it does piss me off knowing that a band like Nickleback can go platinum. I'm sorry, but it cheapens everything about the art. They're the worst kinds of whores. I don't miss out on any pleasure. There is an abundance of fantastic music coming out of every sector of society. I'm not about to start calling a "color by number" song a work of art. It's a work of musical coloring inside the lines.
The OP asked why most people hate those two bands and I answered.

Understand your POV, just disagree with it. Can't think of a single NB song I like but evidently millions of people think differently.
I think most blues acts are "formula driven" but will get fought tooth and nail over that. Eye of the beerholder, they say. Just a hunch, but I doubt those "starving musicians" you refer to are starving because they refuse to "sell out." I imagine everyone would sell out for a few million if they could.

The fact that they are hated, though, is based more on the fact that it is trendy to hate them.
I don't particularly like them, but I in no way hate them. I do appreciate their contribution to the artform.
Rock would have had very little radioplay for good while, were it not to bands like them. . .the airwaves were almost exclusively rap and R&B.

Yeah, it's "cool" to hate Nickelback. I don't really like them or anything but I seriously do not get the hate for them at all. There's much worse. And I have Creed's entire My Own Prison album on my iPod.

WTF are you talking about? The 90s saw a lot of great rock bands get radio play and it wasn't because they were all generic. Clearchannel and payola have a lot to do with what is on the radio since the early 2000s, not Nickelback. Nickelback is just one product of Clearchannel and great promotion (not exclusively).

I don't "hate" Nickleback at all. They suck, in my opinion, but I don't blame them. I think what most people hate is what they represent, which is a disregard for the depth of the art by the vast majority of people. It's sad, really.
Creed aren't nearly as bad.

the ipod is to blame for the death of mainstream rock radio
look at your radio stations... who do they cater to?
-you got "classic rock" and "oldies" stations for people who can't figure out how to work an ipod
-you got rap and hip hop stations, because most of the people that listen to that kinda music have shitty cars you can't hook an ipod to
-and you have news and sports radio because you can't download the lsu baseball game or the murder report in real time onto an ipod
i'm no fan of mainstream rock and feel that dummies listen to it, but generally those dummies don't care for news, can figure out how to put songs on an ipod, and can afford decent cars

I don't care what anyone says, I've hated nickelback from day 1. Probably has to do with them being Canadian, but really the song talking about something on Joey's head puts them over the top as far as being terrible is concerned.

I actually did that song for a broadcasting class project with my group
Mostly because it was so easy to film since my house was right next to the school
Not that bad of a song either

This makes no sense. Young people listen to the mainstream shitty rock. Young people know how to use an ipod and can probably figure out how to hook it up to their car. This is all irrelevant since mainstream radio was already controlled by Clearchannel long before ipods became common.

Which is exactly my point. Clearchannel took over most of the radio stations in the 2000's, which spawned tons of shitty bands to get major airplay on the radio.

First off, for this thread, I will say I thoroughly enjoyed the first Creed album. After that, Stapp acted like Jesus.
Port City, I think the angriest and therefore best workout song off their first album is "Illusion."
Creed was angry and gritty that first album, after Human Clay and "Higher" it was all that high minded uplifting stuff.
As I said in another thread about Nickelback, I liked " Leader of Men" and " Breathe" off their first album, but it went to hell quickly.

False (sorta). First album "The State" was released in 1998 and I liked the songs I listed above. But ya, they hit mainstream in the 2000s.
