Kind of an interesting article written by a guy who went to go see both bands in 1 night. Looks into how both can seem universally hated, yet popular.

It's more just an issue of musicians/music snobs hating them than the general public who gobbles up mindless radio rock and pop.

enjoyable article, but it seems like he ripped on Creed a lot more than Nickelback

I enjoy several of Creed's and Nickelback's songs, but I'm not really fans of either, though I was when I was like 14-15.

The worst thing about Nickelback IMO is their douche, affliction shirt wearing fans

Interdasting.

I don't particularly care for Nickelback and I like a few Creed songs. But seriously, why does everyone hate them?

When I think of the term "rock" with no prefixes the bands I think of seem to be relatively made fun of.

Creed, Nickelback, Three Days Grace, 3 Doors Down

Are they just to mainstream/safe as the article mentioned?

Yes, they are all formula rock bands. Take what someone else made popular, copy/emulate, and repeat.

That's how I feel. Never heard anything by Nickelback I liked, but have a couple Creed songs on my MP3

That's 99% of all music, mainstream, indie, pop...however you want to categorize it.

Yes, but not all bands water it down as badly as the ones you mentioned. The shame is that Creed's guitarist is actually damn good, but the music is just so formulaic and predictable that he doesn't shine at all.

It seems that way because people who are journalists and people who read and post on the internet are a minority, but since they only hang out with people like themselves or post on message boards populated by their kind they think they're the majority. Surprise, the world is poplulated by shirtless idiots rocking out to Creed and Nickelback.

Good music, good art makes you feel something. It doesn't have to be 100% original. You dismiss a lot of potential pleasure by dismissing something only for thinking it's "formulatic." I remember the days when the Stones put out their "disco" album and everyone started hating everything they put out.

I don't pick music apart, and either enjoy it or not. Most groups, I dislike 75% of the stuff they put out. I can't think of any act I dislike everything they have offered though. Take what touches you, don't worry about the rest.

Which is why it's pretty futile to have a narrow view of what constitutes good music.
