Went to the Cake show last night and thought it was terrible. Lead singer wouldn’t stop talking with nonsense and got pissed when the crowd wouldn’t participate the way he wanted them to. Seemed to affect the rest of the show. Will never see them again.

When on some long diatribes about us burning too many fossil fuels, said that I’m sure right now all the white men are mad about me not singing and they can all go home now, also gave away a live tree that took up 15 minutes at least. He seemed to hate white men. He was very off putting and a quick google search says he is known for this type of behavior. Wish I would have known that before the show as I would have never went. The show actually changed the way I view his music now.

Funny story- when my daughter was little she used to hate “Rock n Roll Lifestyle” understandably
I used to sing it to her all the time to annoy her.
Now she likes it!!!
Ahhh yeah!! Ahhh Right!!!

I saw them twice back in the day and they were lame both times. I love their recorded music but live they just don't work.

The lead singer is White. So he hates himself?

He did talk a lot and there was a lot of time spent on giving away the tree. But much of the dialogue and antics were consistent with his droll persona and singing style. He had on a cardigan and looked like an aging liberal arts college professor.
My son (late 20s) said it reminded him of a comedy sketch with all of the props ... bubble machines, inflatable dancing tube men, T-shirt cannons, disco ball, etc.
Some of the deep cuts were uninspired but they saved most of their hits and upbeat songs for the last part of the show - those sounded good and the crowd was pretty into it. Glad that they played War Pigs, and I thought it sounded good.
The guitar player is fantastic. He nailed all of his parts and has very distinctive style. Granted he has been playing the same riffs for 30 years...but still it was impressive to see live.

I was at Wednesday night’s show. Either the shows we went to were wildly different or you’re a sensitive little Nancy.
He made a handful of joking white male quips. Wouldn’t go so far as to call them diatribes. The tree bit took no more than 10 minutes. An audience member got it, but I can’t imagine getting upset if a security guard got it instead.
All in all, had a great time at the show. Everyone around me seemed to be enjoying themselves as well.
Do I agree with what I assume his politics are? Most likely not. But if you’re going to be so affected by THAT show and THAT musician that you feel you need to go make this thread and also go complain about it on Reddit (I see you!) you may need to go refill your blood pressure medicine.
Chill out, grab a drink and go listen to some music. I promise you life is more enjoyable if you don’t take yourself so seriously.

I was at the Tuesday show in Mobile and it was fantastic.
Cake always puts on a good show and McCrea does a great job of getting crowd involvement.
Sounds like you're just a sour arse.

I haven't seen them in 20 years but their old dtuff is definitely worth listening to. That monotone voice over a nasty funk beat always cracked me up. Very innovative use of the trumpet as a counterpoint to the monotone vocals, too.

Sounds like my experience when I saw them 20+ years ago. One of the worst shows I've ever been to.

Saw them a year or so ago. Yeah, he made some comments about the general state of how things are, but nothing too overt. No "white male" comments, which would have annoyed me. But the show was awesome if you are a fan of Cake.
Musicians are often times pretty big idiots when it comes to things not music. A lot of them are high school dropouts. Look at all the dumb shite the Strokes lead singer said at Coachella. He thought we were having a military draft because of the long planned move from manual to automated / automatic registration for 18 year olds into selective service.

You guys excited about the draft? Oh, wait, not the NFL draft,” he said. “In six months, I think everyone who’s eligible for the military has to register. You guys excited? Well, I hope to lead one of the Coachella units. The sexiest unit in our proud military, I’m sure.”
