Alice In Chains, in my opinion. And they still put on a hell of a live show. One of my absolute favorite concerts of all time was AIC at the Ryman Auditorium a few years back.

I like both bands. But I was always an AIC guy. Retrospectively, AIC as a whole is more listenable over and over than Soundgarden.

The best part of your pics is Jason Everman in the Soundgarden photo, left of Cornell. He is an alpha war dog that actually fought the fight. Look him up.

This is tough one ...
Almost too close to call. Soundgarden's only clear edge is at drummer - maybe a slight edge at singer (and, having said that, I wouldn't want to hear Cornell over Staley on AIC songs and vice versa, so there's that). Likewise, I'm not sure I don't edge Cantrell over Thayil at guitar (but, again, ever so slightly if at all).
Plus, I liked the AIC songs, overall, better.

Love both. Soundgarden for me. Superunknown is the GOAT Grunge album imo.

I feel like this is really Jerry Cantrell vs Chris Cornell. I'm not sure there's a clear answer here. Now if you asked me which one is my favorite, AiC without question.

Tough one. I prefer Soundgarden's music as a whole. But the harmonies in AiC are fantastic.

Alice, that Soundgarden guy's voice really grates on my nerves. Definition of trying to hard.

I would put Jerry over him, Jerry's riffs are so unique and iconic. His incorporation of the blues scale in guitar really is still powerful. And as a live player, I'd also put him over Kim.

It is a toss up. Cantrell >>> Kim but also Cornell >>>>> Layne. The other members were equally as good.
Seen them both live. AIC is a better live show.

Thayil is a better guitarist. Cornell is a much better singer. AIC had one great album, Soundgarden had two. I would even put Louder Than Love and Down on the Upside ahead of Facelift and the self titled album. I will say AIC's new stuff with Duvall is far better than King Animal though.

Always preferred AIC. Lets see how soundgarden does with a new lead singer.

No question Will Duvall filled Layne's performance shoes. I wanna see someone fill Cornell's.

AIC is the better band IMO because they had a better peak and career. Their revival with DuVall has been spectacular.
Cornell is the best musician/vocalist between the two, though and it ain't close. Just look at his solo work, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave. I still miss Cornell.

I think they are relatively evenly matched. I enjoy AIC more when just popping on an album.
I will say in having this debate a few times it seems like a common thread I find is that people seem to often like AIC more but feel like they are supposed to rate soundgarden higher.

Both bands are great, but AIC is slightly better imo due to the incredible vocal harmonies of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. Jerry Cantrell was also a better guitarist imo. I don't think Kim Thayil is a bad guitarist, he's pretty underrated considering he had some very catchy riffs and many of Soundgarden's songs were in odd time signatures. The thing is, Jerry Cantrell not only played great memorable and technical guitar parts, he sang while playing them. AIC has been able to move on without Lane Staley since they also had a great and similar sounding singer in Jerry Cantrell. Without Chris Cornell, SG would not work.
