He’s slipping. Moreland has passed him.

Definitely agree on Pug

5 years ago I might have agreed on Dawes but I seem to be the only one that is completely bored by their last few efforts.

Dawes has always been boring. You’ve just come out of a phase.

once in the recent past there was a venue in BR that actually hosted three of the artists mentioned here: Pug, Moreland and Jurado.

Jurado is the only person mentioned that I've never heard of. Going to give him a try.

Joe pug is my next concert. That dude is so talented its not even funny. Playing the guitar and the harmonica at the same time just kind of blows my mind.

If we were vampires is masterclass songwriting. Isbell is an amazing writer. One of the best of his generation

He made that one song that pissed off hardcore conservatives, so he’s not as good anymore I guess

Moreland is also great

His voice won't blow anybody out of the water that's for sure but I do still enjoy them. And they are a blast live.

I've only seen my wife cry a handful of times. When we saw him live and he played this I looked over and she was crying, I was like whoa ok. But it is incredibly sad and now makes me choke up when I listen to it around her. One of maybe 3 songs ever that does that to me.

Nah

"Maybe it's the fire in my little girl's eyes" is cringe city and should be an automatic deduction from his song writer score

You condemned him based on one line? Lol. You could name your top 100 songwriters and every one of them will have multiple corny/cliche verses.

I mean, I pay money to see him every time he's here so I'm not truly "condemning" him. But I think his increasing woke-ness combined with the experience of becoming a parent is leading to mixed results.

"White Man's World" isn't upsetting because it's a liberal song, it's upsetting because it's a platitude filled mess of a song. Isbell being a conflicted southern dude trying to find his place and fight his demons probably helped him craft really interesting music for a really long time. My concern, if you want to call it that, is that he's settled into a "safe" environment of like-minded entertainers repeating cliche social justice arguments and that isn't really doing his art any favors. We'll see what happens, I haven't burned his albums or anything.

Ritter, Oberst and Isbell are probably top 3.

Surprised nobody else has said the avett brothers. One of my favorite lines ever...

"Last night I dreamt the whole night long
I woke with a head full of songs
I spent the whole day
I wrote 'em down, but its a shame
Tonight I'll burn the lyrics,
'Cause every chorus was your name"
