This thread seems to be mainly about the latest generation of songwriters, so of those:
Conor Oberst
Josh Tillman (Father John Misty)
Jason Isbell
Damien Rice
Josh Ritter
Ryan Adams
But obviously people like this are still "on the planet":
Bob Dylan
Paul Simon
John Prine
Roger Waters
Van Morrison
Conor Oberst
Josh Tillman (Father John Misty)
Jason Isbell
Damien Rice
Josh Ritter
Ryan Adams

I’ll cast a vote for BJ Barham.

I love a lot of his stuff and he is a great songwriter, but he doesn't make my list simply bc he covered, not just one song, but an entire Taylor swift album. He's running out of words to put on paper.

I can’t believe Gregory Alan Isakov has gotten no love with all the artists thrown out here who are associated with him.
I’ll be seeing him, Joe Purdy, Gillian Welch, and a host of other talented songwriters and musicians af Fayetteville Roots Fesf later this month.

Another new world by josh Ritter might be one of the most hauntingly beautiful songs ever created

Another good one. I haven't listened to a ton of his stuff, mainly bc theres xo much dang good music out there, but what I have, I loved it.
The lead singer of deer tick is another one that comes to mind. On the middle brother album I think he does a better job than the dawes and delta spirit guys.

Not sure about best on the planet. But the best most people have never heard of is Ray LaMontagne.

I never think to mention him, which is weird because I probably listen to him 2-3 hours a week while working.
