Anyone mention Aaron Lewis? Staind's first 2 albums were in the 90's. I think he's got a great rock voice as well and deserves a mention.

No way I can pick a best, but I really don't understand how anyone listens to Staley or Cornell. I could get Cornell if he never screamed. 1st part of Hunger Strike is a classic example.

I agree with this. I'm at work so I can't link, but check out his Mondo Cane videos on youtube. I like Quello Che Conta and Urlo Negro. Also, to see his range beyond singing check out Adult Themes for Voice. It isn't really listenable as far as music goes, but it is beyond impressive as far as a display of ability is concerned.

Chris Cornell is the answer but Billy Corgan was a great singer when he wanted to be (see: Siamese Dream).

I largely agree... not quite sure I'd say one of the best voices of all time in any genre... but he is a huge talent and is generally under-rated.
My first thought for this thread was Cornell, but then I was thinking about Weiland... I think he not only has a very good voice, but is a more dynamic and versatile performer / showman. If his personal problems didn't keep screwing up his opportunities, I'm pretty sure he'd be a more popular choice, a la Cornell and Vedder... who personally annoys me (though that's neither here nor there).
