Gilmour may be the best at expressing himself.

It's interesting that you said this, because whenever I get into this conversation, I always end up, at some point, making the point that Gilmour is the single most expressive guitar player I've ever heard. He's definitely in my top 5. I don't know if there's ever been anyone with such a knack for actually saying something, for expressing a theme or an idea with a guitar.

Also, his tone is just incredible.

I love me some Joe Walsh but it's really hard for me to lump him in with the best.

Great blues player. It's a shame they went so mainstream in the '80s.

Zack Wylde

People used to give Dimbebag a hard time for his overuse of pinch harmonics, but holy shite Wylde relies far too heavily on effects and vibrato.

I'm going to throw a name out there, some of you may have heard of him, George Lynch of Dokken fame. For a sample of this man's incredible work, check out the solo on this song.

For the love of God, why was one of the best guitarists of that era inclined to operate in such a baseless genre of music?

Also, Dan Dokken's voice held that group back. If Lynch would have teamed up with a vocalist with some power in his voice then that would have been special.

I could never narrow it down to a single musician because there are so many factors that contribute to being a great guitarist (e.g. originality, creativity, technique, soul, power, improvisation, etc.).

My immediate list would be:

David Gilmour
Jeff Beck
Eric Clapton
Jimmy Paige
Ritchie Blackmore
Robin Trower
Warren Haynes
Jimi Hendrix
SRV
Carlos Santana
Duane Allman/Dickey Betts
Adrian Smith/Dave Murray
Dimebag Darrell

Brian May and James Hetfield should be somewhere on this list. Yes, Hetfield. He's a brilliant rhythm player that brought thrash galloping right hand palm-mutes to the forefront and has written literally 100's of the great riffs that still stand. Alot of people only consider the left hand when it comes to guitar playing but the right hand can be a great tool in it's own right. Dimebag had a sensational right hand. Both of the players in Maiden (mentioned above) as well.

I can get down with that. May is an absolute badass who built his own guitar. I've never thought much of his riffs, aside from "Stone Cold Crazy", but he is a smooth player.

Hetfield might be the best downpicker in rock/metal and is responsible for some of the most recognizable riffs in music history. I agree that his palm-muting is about as good as it gets.

Now that I think about it, I'm regretting the fact that I left off Dave Mustaine from the list. Those are some of the most intricate riffs you will ever find.

Yup, I agree. Fantastic right hand and I like where Mustaine's mind is when he lays out his riffs. Very catchy. If we're going to discuss metal right hand's -
Mark Morton and Willie Adler from Lamb of God are both fantastic, Morton being an overall great player across the board.

You're not kidding, man. I fell in love with them recently and I'm really hoping that they do the Mayhem Fest next year so I can catch them live.

What's crazy is that I think Chris Adler is more talented than his brother.

In terms of metal, I'd also throw in Jon Schaffer of Iced Earth when it comes to writing brilliant riffs. While his technique isn't quite as clean as his peers, he still has a pretty brutal pace to his playing.

But when it comes to the entire packagev(e.g. virtuosity, speed, power), there is the late, great Chuck Shuldiner of Death.

Joe Bonamassa says Greg Koch is the best guitar player in the world and you can definitely argue the case. That guy is bad to the fricking bone.

Koch is my number one guitar hero, here he is burning it up on stage with Bonamassa.

Marty Friedman's solo on Megadeth's 'Tornado of Souls' is widely considered one of the best rock solos in metal.

It's obviously all personal preference, but I think Trey is on a whole different level than anyone else. He has done things that I don't understand how they are possible.

In the jazz world Wes, Al DiMeola, and Bill Frissell deserve a mention.

They aren't necessarily the best, but my favorites are Allman, Garcia, Clapton, and Betts.

Gonna throw Frusciante in the mix since "expressive playing" is being included. Some of the RHCP live shows with him are insane. You feel exactly what he's playing. Add in his solo shite and he deserves to be on the list IMO
