Was having a discussion at work and we came to the conclusion it's too hard to pick. Here are some of my picks.
Jimmy Paige
David Gilmour
Randy Rhodes
Joe Walsh
Billy Gibbons
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Zack Wylde

Go to answer for a lot of people is Hendrix. Although he created a new style and was dam good I personally don't care for his sound much.

Definitely way too hard to pick just one but I love Hendrix' sound as well as SRV, both played with such passion and energy. Trey Anastasio when he is/was on his game is a personal favorite - very unique tone and pacing. Skydog and Trucks were /are amazing and Warren Haynes is another personal favorite of mine. Anders Osborne has really grown on me in the past few years and is definitely one of my current favorites. Tash neal is up and coming, but not afraid to show what he has got on stage. A lot of the older blues guys would be up there for me too, but I just really enjoy that style. Jimmie Paige of course

Although I love them both very much, Gibbon and Walsh belong nowhere near this list. Of that list, strictly on tone and physical playability, SRV and Wylde smoke everyone. Gilmour may be the best at expressing himself.

Hendrix death at 27 hurts him IMO in this discussion.

I would have loved to see him at 50 still wailing and earlier in his 40's. He may not have peaked which is mind blowing.

SRV is my vote. He took everything Hedrix did but did it better and with his one sound, style, and tone. But again died too young. Though his body of work was longer.

SRV is great and all, but no. Just no.

I don't have any problem with Hendrix at the top spot.

But today i'll roll with Roy Buchanan.

I'm going to throw a name out there, some of you may have heard of him, George Lynch of Dokken fame. For a sample of this man's incredible work, check out the solo on this song.

Dokken- Heaven Sent

The guitar solo starts at 2:51 in the song, and this solo is one of the most intense, exciting guitar solos I've ever heard.

Little Wing.

He took that riff apart and made it incredible. Maybe Hendrix would have done it better and better had he lived. We will never know.

Fwiw. I cannot and will not bash Hendrix he was incredible. He pioneered a style that everyone took and improved upon.

How long was Hendrix relevant AND alive.
