Jump into the fire.
Nilsson.

quote:

Herbie Flowers (bass) and Jim Gordon (drums).[6] Flowers recalls that Nilsson gave only vague instructions: "lots of tom-toms, a bass riff in D major."[6] The bass part includes a section where, following Gordon's drum solo, Flowers detunes as he plays.[5][7] According to Flowers, he began loosening the bottom string "for a laugh", believing that by that point in the song, the performance would be faded out on the released recording.

Somebody or Mama Kin have exponentially stronger bass.

But I think of No Fun - Stooges. Makes the walls rattle in my garage.

"There is nothing else like "The Real Me" by the Who. Entwistle playing lead guitar on his bass. Probably my favorite rock song ever done."

.... absolutely right! Ox's bass is actually the lead instrument in this song. I have been telling people that this song also has the greatest combination of bass and drum playing in history.

I couldn't agree more about Moon and Entwistle being the the greatest drum/bass combo that has ever played. The Who were at a different level because of them for too short a while. Entwistle seemed to carry the load after Moon OD'd. This is really good:

Another I'll add that is a great bass driven song is Can't Get There From Here by REM. I hadn't listened to them for a VERY long time but the bass in that one stood out recently.

Elvis Costello - What's So Funny About Peace Love and Understanding is another great one.

I think if you are going to lead with Bass you'd better have great drums too.

here's one that probably doesnt spring immediately to mind
"something" the beatles
george could write a melody but as a lyricist...not so great. paul on the other hand added a frenetic bassline to the song, which takes it from what could be a treacly acoustic ballad into an all-time classic

I was almost related to Les Claypool. He and my cousin were high school sweethearts. She dumped him in their 20s because his music career wasn't going anywhere and she wanted him to get a real job and get married.
They lived in California and me in Arkansas. We were out there visiting. I was about 10 years old at the time and he was just the weird dude Melanie was dating, but I can say I have had dinner with Les Claypool.
