They were never called STP as an official name. They went from Mighty Joe Young to Stone Temple Pilots.

The were inspired by STP, so sure we can count it.

Sugar Ray was originally named the Shrinky Dinks, but Melton Bradley threatened to sue.

Maroon 5 was named after the Maroon Group, LLC.

REO Speedwagon

quote:

With the demise of the Oldsmobile brand from the General Motors lineup several years ago, the current generation may not even realize that Oldsmobile was just one of several successful ventures created by Ransom Eli Olds. In his early years, Ransom E. Olds was granted many patents, which led others in the industry to label him one of America's most important automotive founders, and one of his company's creations eventually became the namesake for a popular rock band—we're guessing you know which one.

That reminds me that the country band Diamond Rio was named after the truck company Diamond Reo. They changed the spelling of Reo --> Rio to avoid any legal issues.

The Polka Tulk Blues Band was named after a brand of talcum powder that Ozzy's mom used.

Obviously, they later became Black Sabbath (named after the 1963 Boris Karloff movie).
