Anybody camp out to buy concert tickets before the internet was a thing?
Posted by Ramblin Wreck on 12/9/21 at 10:32 pm92
When I was in high school, I skipped school and camped out with friends for about 3 days in line at the Birmingham Civic Center to get tickets for the Police Synchronicity tour. I bought the maximum number allowed (10 I think) and sold 9 of them for about $5 over asking price. The $45 in profit seemed like a lot of money to me at the time, which is about how much I made for busing tables at a restaurant on the weekends.
The ticket office was right outside the concert hall. The most interesting evening was the night a Loverboy concert was taking place while we were in line. Seeing people messed up in concerts isn't uncommon, but they don't hold a candle to those that are so messed up that they get kicked out of the event.
Pretty dumb story, but I still tell it today because it was so funny at the time. The line went down a ramp with a brick wall on either side, which offered a little protection from the wind at night. The morning the tickets went on sale, there were hundreds of people in line that wrapped down to the lower portion of the venue. I remember somebody had a dog that took a big dump at the lower level. Since we were all pretty bored by then, we all lined up along the wall and if someone at the lower level was walking anywhere near the dog shite, we would all cheer very loudly and wave our arms trying to get their attention. They would generally look up trying to figure out what was going on and wouldn't see the dog shite in their path. If they stepped in it, we would all cheer even louder. If they missed it, we would all in unison yell, "awww shite". Yeah, it was dumb, but pretty funny at the time. Overall it was a pretty fun experience and I met a lot of cool people.

When I was in high school, one of my friend's mom's paid us to camp out to get her and her friends tickets to see Rod Stewart.
After we got the tickets, his mom and her friends only paid us half of what they'd told us that we'd get because the tickets weren't front row-center(but they were on the first row). We went down there as soon as they asked us to, so we were kinda pissed about it.
Rod Stewart ended up canceling the show, so it all kind of worked out in the end.

I used to go down to the Syracuse War Memorial box office to get tickets. Either there or the Ticketmaster Outlet. Sometimes I had to get tickets at the record store.

A few times. And it was always bullshite. I don't recall what the system was like pre-internet, but you could never seem to get front row even if you were close to the front of the line.

I stood in line at Cortana Mall for Van Halen tickets. Ticketmaster was either in Dillard's or Godchaux, I don't remember which.

Last time I did it was for KISS Alive reunion outside the dome. You could get them on dial up then but it seemed like the thing to do. Wound up on floor row 12.

Camped out at the Cajundome box office for tickets to the U2 Joshua Tree show in BR. The damn show sold out in 33 minutes. We ended up first row behind the stage. They turned out to be great seats.
Stood in line many a times at D.H. Holmes in the Acadiana Mall.

Hell yeah. We camped out outside the mall because Sound Shop had Ticketmaster. Got us on the floor in the Dome to see Metallica and Guns n Roses.

1984 I did in the fall for Springsteen tickets and some them for double. 8th row. It's was Christmas break concert at MTSU, and I was going to be at home back in New Orleans. Camped out again in 87 for U2 tickets. Those were fun times.

Not camp out overnight but got up real early for Robert Plant and went to the mall to wait for tickets. Got 7th or 8th row. I think he was wasted and the show was decent but Cheap Trick opened up and was a lot of fun and put on a heckuva show.

Camped out for U2 also. It was fun because a lot of us just partied through the night. I ended up getting on the side of the stage 2 rows up.

Ticketmaster would always do a lottery to whoever is first in line. It was only for the people that showed up early
Use to camp out in the 90s for pit tickets to Pantera, Zombie, Metallica, Korn, Rage

No, but I know a few that showed up at venues with a Coke shirt claiming they were there for a service call. It works.

Never camped overnight but I did stand in line for a few hours to get ZZ Top tickets in Columbia SC back in the late 80's. Wound up with pretty good seats though not front row
Pink Floyd was the big one, during the "Momentary Lapse of Reason" tour. A huge line was there, we argued all night who was better Waters' band or Gilmour's band.

A friend of mine and I camped out at the LSU track for tickets to Pink Floyd (Animals tour). Totally worth it.

Remember going to the Ticketmaster location with my dad
They had the layout of the arena and we would select exactly where we wanted to sit from the map
They printed the tickets right then and there .
Good times

Was camping out for Sugar Bowl tickets outside of TigerStadium Box office and wound up getting to go see Springsteen. Didn't camp out overnight but went to Tower Records on Decatur around midnight in 1988 for Stones tickets .
