Am I the only person here who doesn't group music by decade?

I don't think that way. I categorize music by genre. If I hear a great power pop record from 1996, it goes into my P-P grouping. I don't immediately think "Well yeah '96 was a great year."
Aside from the historical context, I don't really care when something came out.

The seeds of eighties punk/new wave were sown in the early to mid seventies. Some would even say the late sixties. It all blends together.

Southern Rock of the 70s is a lot different than Southern Rock of today and that goes for all genres. So I find it easier to group by decade. Plus a lot if not most of my favorite bands hopped genres quite a bit.

I rarely group music at all, but when i do its never by decade.
The only thing i group by year is the grateful dead because they morphed and changed a lot year by year.

I doubt December 31, 1989 and January 1, 1990 were THAT different

I usually categorize it by genre to, although I use "90's indie rock", because it has a distinction to me over the general term "indie rock"
It was a lot more guitar/lo-fi based than the stuff since then... someone put it best in another thread, when they called a lot of it since then, the "wussification" of indie rock... Now i have seen some signs of that coming around again... but 3-4 band members max and no one running around on stage playing a trash can lid and hand clapping...

I'm with Alx. Also, I tend not to think of decades as beginning precisely on the 0. The 60s run from about 64-71. The 70s go from 72-79. The 80s from 80-90. 90s are almost two decades, from 91-95 and then 96 to about 02. It makes sense in my head.
But I don't really classify by genre either. My iPod is pretty much "Rock" or "Blues" or "Rap" or "Classical" without much breakdown from there.
