Is there something to this?

I ran into someone from college recently that I hadn’t seen in years. He was the dead head guy then and 20 years later, he’s now a parent but still wearing a belt with those stupid dancing bears on it.

To each his own and whatever makes you happy, but Im trying to understand how listening to the same limited catalog of songs over and over and over And Over your whole life isn’t missing the point

It’s not unique to this fellow. I see it on here too.

Once you spazz out to phish panic dead etc, rarely does anyone let go. Very strsnge

Have you ever met nerdy Rush fans?

You say Pete, it’s all Rush all the time, how about some variety?
Rush is variety, bitch!

Exactly. Thank you

Scientists don’t even actually understand 90% of the human brain. But there is such a thing as hypnosis, right?

And how do you hypnotize humans? It’s always something repetitive, self-indulgent, long and drawn out, and extended, etc. In other words everything you would see at a jamband concert if you were on stage behind band watching the crowd

I mean people literally dance alone by themselves at these things. And never recover or try anything else into adulthood

I’m not suggesting there’s something nefarious going on, just that this phenomenon may hint at something weird

Michael Houser era Widespread Panic is/was my favorite band. I saw them live a lot and listened to them a lot. That doesn’t mean I didn’t/don’t listen to anything else. I listen to a lot of different music. Always have.

Huge Rush fan, but I really appreciate diversity so I'll throw in some PInk Floyd from time to time.

LOL... I'm sitting here with R40 queued up, listening through all 3 hours.

Though it's the first time I've had Rush playing in a few weeks.

This right here shows you have zero clue what you are talking about.

Please enlighten us about the grateful deads limited catalog.

Yes, limited catalog.

It’s not rocket science: they created a finite amount of material. Haven’t produced anything new in 30 years or whatever

And people have spent those 30 years since, listening to the same limited catalog over and over. And over. And over. Nonstop. Almost like they were hypnotized

I understand revisiting music you liked 30 years ago. But I don’t understand listening to the same exact songs every single day for your entire life and wearing belts with bears on it to advertise this

The majority of the people I know who listen to the Grateful Dead listen to a TON of other types of music as well. The Dead and Dead adjacent bands led me to explore so many different genres from bluegrass to country to jazz to folk to blues, etc..

That being said: I don't listen to the various jambands that much anymore. I do still listen to the Dead, though.

I've never understood the appeal of jam bands. I guess conceptually I can grok the concept of, "Every time they get on stage they reinvent every single song, man. Every performance is a once-in-a-lifetime event." But then I listen to it and it's just a bunch of guys noodling around on their instruments while performing songs whose lengths are best measured in geologic time. Not my cup of tea, at all.

Lol. You’re even more clueless than I thought. If “finite amount of material” is your definition of a “limited catalog,” then not only does everyone have a limited catalog, but by your (faulty) reasoning, the combined works of every musical artist who’s ever lived is a limited catalog and who can understand why anyone would bother to listen to any of it? You’re essentially arguing that the term “limited catalog” applies to everyone which is to deprive the term of any meaning at all.

You should check out The Buggles. Their catalog is apparently no more limited than anyone else’s. They’re probably right up your alley.

What do you even mean by this? You don’t listen to albums that you liked 20 years ago?

ETA- I think this whole thread is just about you getting annoyed with Dead merch. Newsflash people rep what they like.

Bet the OP rocks his Georgia PFG on casual Fridays and his fat wife has a giant G sticker on her Infiniti SUV. Yet judges a dude that has a dancing bear belt.
