deftones are big for the varsity, shitty for baton rouge music scene (or lack thereof).

Doc, what do you do for the Varsity? Do you work the door or a bartender?
ETA: I was 18 in 1992. From 1992 to 2000 - was The Varsity's prime. That's what I use to gauge my opinion on. That's how I remember it. There was a time when I was at LSU when The Varsity and Tip's would do back to back appearances. And I'm not talking about survivors of the 70s and 80s. I'm talking Blind Melon, Dave Matthews, G Love and Special Sauce, 311, etc. There was on average about 4-5 shows a week. And there used to be a strict "no coverband or shitty local band" policy. I know because I was in a band and we tried like hell to get in to open up for an opening act for one of the nationally touring bands. It was hard at one time to "get in".
What the hell happened to those days? There was the same issue back then as well as far as competing with the major cities. That has always been the case. It's not some brand new occurence. Yet, somehow whoever was doing the booking back then seemed to make it happen.

It is my understanding that the varsity wasn't making money during that run. The talent buyer at the time was paying bands all of the ticket sales plus a large percentage of bar revenue to be able to book those acts.
On a side note, the canes box was 5$ including drink. Good times those late 90's.

That sounds like something the person who handled booking during its suck period would have responded with, if confronted by his boss.

Doc, i just want to thank you guys for getting Chino and the boys in Baton Rouge. I have a big group of friends who are all huge Deftones fans and we are ecstatic that we wont have to drive an hour or more to see them.
The intimacy of The Varsity is going to make for a "dream" show experience for any long time fan.
The people who are hating on The Deftones in this and the other thread, have definitely not seen them live. The raw emotion that this band gives to a crowd is unmatched by any band mentioned as a "better" show. I guess to each his own but I could not imagine a better band for the venue. I'm already salivating for their 7 Words encore!!

8 minutes is legit! 
There is a place in Tempe where I see shows and it sounds A LOT like The Varsity but they seem to have better acts. It's just one big shitty room that is standing room only and it has a huge bar. I have see the Wu-Tang Clan there twice this year and they MAYBE had 200 people each show. In BR wouldn't wu-tang clan sell out an 800 seat theatre?. Here is their site: LINK
