I love the fact that the Varsity keeps pulling rock acts that I enjoy. I've already seen Chevelle and 10 Years there since I've been at LSU and now I'll add the Deftones.

Word has been spreading. There's a new approach with how Alex treats agents and bands.
Old talent buyer had a chance to book bands that would make you do a little dance, but he passed out of fear mostly.
Deftones was one of them.

There were a lot of problems with meeting the bottom line, so instead of taking a chance on a national act that might not sell well...he booked the Molly Ringwald's and such 445064 times. Certain people think cover bands are awesome for some reason
It's a shame, but I'm glad there is a new direction now.

You forgot contracts....While I'm not big on the whole deftones show people need to realize some of these bands are asking for a lot of money, and the venues need to make sure that they can sell enough tickets to at least break even.
I used to book a lot of bands here in Houma, and turned down some good shows because I didn't want to put my name on a contract and have to eat the cost if people didn't show. It's not just the cost of the band you have to look at either, it's the cost of promotion and meeting the terms on the ryder.
An good example is The Bright Light Social Hour.
A few months back I talked to their booking agent about getting them to Houma. They could have done a sunday night, but they were asking $1000 (which is nothing compared to other bands).
After thiking about it, I turned it down because I would have probably lost money on that for a few reasons.
1. promotion cost
2. cost of someone to run sound
3. cost to feed the band/meet the ryder agreements
4. not many people have heard of them, and it would have been hard to convince people to come out on a sunday night to check out a band they haven't heard of.
There is a lot more that goes into booking a band then a lot of people realize

My question is... why can't he get recently popular acts to prove this? Why does he have to get bands like Bush or The Deftones? What is wrong with attempting to snag younger bands?

They've gotten Chevelle and 10 Years. They're both younger bands that are fairly big in the modern hard rock scene.
