It is the genre. Hard rock just isn't the popular thing anymore. You have to really search to try to find new bands. Chevelle was completely packed and I'm pretty sure that 10 Years was pretty full, but probably not as much as Chevelle.

This couldn't be further from the truth.
I've booked many touring bands down here, and just about every show was packed.
My old band also packed every show we played down here. There were a lot more than just our friends at the bar.
The problem is people don't know how to promote shows anymore, they rely posting events on facebook (which most people probably don't even notice). You've got to get the word out through social media, put flyers out everywhere possible, and talk to people.
Houma actually has a pretty good music scene, and some pretty good bands.

Maybe he is working on bands like the ones you named. A lot of younger bands stick to cities with a higher demographic so they can make a name for themselves. New York, L.A, Chicago, etc. I'm sure if those younger bands had a choice they would pick New Orleans over Baton Rouge just because of the name of the city and size.

The problem is the people who own the varsity don't care about music. They hardly care about the varsity. It is decoration for the chimes. If they would make an investment to wrap the balcony around, similar to tipitinas, then they could compete with the new orleans venues for bigger acts.

I don't know what to say to that.
Yes, I know what a radius clause is, I also know Jack (management) probably told the goober running Voodoo to F himself if he brought that up. Jack has been playing secret live shows all through this tour-from very small concert halls to laundry mats to parking lots..sometimes the day of the show and sometimes the night before.
The Varsity can get Deftones, but they can't get Alabama Shakes. The former has won Grammy's and sold millions. You can see how past accomplishments and notoriety can be quite misleading.
Someone I know quite well worked for a major label on Music Row for over a decade-you aren't the only person who knows music related things because you heard a few bands before others and your buddy works at the Varsity by campus.
LSU has 30,000 students in addition to being in a city with a quarter of a million throughout the parish.
I have no doubt the Deftones will sellout, but this isn't a major announcement or some groundbreaking move that will turn the heads of record execs in LA and Nashville. Not worthy of an announcement several days beforehand creating anticipation, either.
The Varsity has certainly improved and the guy booking should be commended. But let's not get ahead of ourselves when many see Bush and the Deftones as bands who were celebrated more in the 90s (yes, I'm aware if the recent albums and its numbers you've posted about quite extensively).
I will say it is nice to see you creating momentum and being part of the cause to help get the Varsity back where it used to be.

I've never had a conversation with anyone about Alabama Shakes. Not that there's a problem with them, but clearly not on the level of Deftones.

I actually had never heard of them until this thread just now. They're not really my type of music, though, so I would never search for their genre of music in the first place.

the Deftones are the shite and have kicked arse for 20 yrs. I know they are 2 different types of genres... but comparing the Shakes to the Deftones is a joke IMO.
