Does anyone outside of Detroit know any MC5 songs besides "Kick out the Jams"? Sure, some hipsters and music buffs do...but HOF status should transcend way beyond that. But they were Pioneers!...they very well may have been, but they do not carry nearly the catalog that some of the other nominees (who also won't get in) do.

However they were influential, especially to a lot of punk bands in the 70s. Name me one band influenced by the Dave Matthews Band.

Being influential doesn't get you into the HOF. You need to have a certain level of popularity too. You have bands like The Melvins, Celtic Frost, and plenty of other underground bands that were hugely influential on entire genres but never had mainstream success that will never be nominated.

Do they just need to rename this the Music Hall of Fame. It seems they are always inducting people who didnt make R&R music. Nothing wrong with that as I am a fan of multiple genres, but it seems that its only logical that only R&R artists would go in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll HOF is some boomer bullshite. frick Jann Wenner deep in the arse with a broken bottle of Jim Beam.
However, if it is going to exist, the criteria ought to be how much of an impact a band had on pop culture. Would things be significantly different if they never existed? I'm a huge Soundgarden fan, but I don't know if they should go in ahead of Depeche Mode or Biggie, based on that.

Based on catalogue sales the Doobies or Whitney Houston would crush it.

Couldn't tell you. Never a Dave Matthews guy. Only time I listened was a college girlfriend who took control of her car radio and I didn't want to start a fight.

So the HOF is only about sales?
You should probably inform them cause they say,
quote:

Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists' contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.

Who are some underground rock acts in the HOF that weren't commercially successful? Its already been noted here that MC5 has been nominated a bunch but isn't in. If we're going on influence someone like Black Flag should be a first ballot HOFer but they'll never come close.

I have no idea, the RnR HOF is a complete joke, I’m just telling you what they say they are about.
You do know they have an “early influence” category, don’t you?

Huh? Not to discount their importance at all but imo they don’t belong in a rock and roll HoF.
