You could do the same thing with most stories.
The Matrix, for example
If you remove the computer aspect of the Matrix, you'd have a completely different movie.
Star Wars revolves around the force, which is much more akin to fantasy/magic than science.
There really is no "science" so to speak of in Star Wars. All the technology is just presented as simply existing. There is no evolution of the technology, explanation of existence, or questions as to its applicability.
The mysticism of the Jedi, the Force, etc. is what is expounded upon and explained and it has no basis in science.
It's not science fiction.

And if a Unicorn appeared in Star Wars...everyone would say...cool!
If a Unicorn appeared in Terminator, Aliens or Eternal Sunshine...everyone would say...WTF?

It would be about some wizards who keep people in a state of suspension or some such, for some such reason. Would it be completely the same? No.
But neither would Star Wars if you removed the droids, death star, aliens, etc.

what if one appeared in blade runner?

I'm not taking about dreams...I'm talking about Harrison Ford doing something Star Wars would do like..."hey, lets ride this Unicorn and think nothing of it!"
And I'm not referring to discovering new species of Lizards or whatnot...but incorporating our own mythical animals into the future.
Things can look like science fiction because of the setting...space...final frontier...but if their story just becomes fantasy and magic...then you can see a Unicorn in the script and it would make sense.

Science Fiction requires themes where non-existent, but potentially possible, science is used to drive the plot.
Star Wars is fantasy as its main themes are not driven by potential science.
if i had kept posting in thsi thread this morning, i was going to make almost this exact point
that's a big part of sci-fi

Agree. That's what I was getting at in my earlier post. The advanced science is really incidental to the actual theme and plot. The basic story could take place with swords and bows and arrows, really.
You could do that to any story. Some items that haven't been mentioned, a device that can blow up a planet, and the villain is half man half machine.

Getting into the belly of the genre debate is kind of fun, and you have it right actually.
But arguing it can tick people off, because although some people like to think they don't care, as soon as you say something actually true, like Star Wars isn't a science fiction film, they get a little perturbed.

Honestly I don't understand how you reach that conclusion. FTL speed isn't available to us but its discovery wouldn't preclude science as the source of the discovery. It certainly wouldn't be magic.

I haven't seen an example of anyone getting perturbed. Just rationale evidence of Star Wars meeting every definition of the Sci Fi genre. Just because additional elements are added to the Star Wars saga doesn't negate the assertion that its sci fi at its core.
I'm not perturbed. I'm right.

A unicorn would make sense in this film.

I don't think it would be too out of the ordinary if they crashed or landed on an alien world with unicorns. It would be weird, but not completely out of the question with the universe we've been given.

Disagree. Genre debates are annoying and pointless for the most part. It made this thread significantly less interesting.

I still don't get the argument in that it can't be both sci-fi and fantasy. I can see your argument, but I don't see how its completely out for sci-fi. By your definition, would you say that LOST was sci fi, fantasy, or both, because that and maybe Buck Rodgers are the only shows/films I can think of on the top of my head that would meet the definition.

Exactly. I'll stipulate its a sci fi movie with a dash of fantasy. However, if you read any Wayne Dyer books you'll know not everyone considers the Force to be fantasy.
Speaking of fantasy, I'm leaving in less than an hour for New Orleans where I'll revel in Crimson Tide delusion and fantasy.

There are a lot of great movies that could move in or out of my top 5-10 but I think I would probably always include
2001
Contact
Terminator
I like Minority Report and Gattacca for making pretty good use of what I think of as the classic formula for science fiction (how does revolutionary technology change the society? - btw excepting the obvious reasons why not this would mean a movie about a future Eli Whitney and the cotton gin would have made a helluva science fiction movie in 1800)
Regarding the Star Wars science fiction or fantasy debate I would say the originally trilogy was really more of a science fantasy take on traditional myths... but that opinion will probably inspire howls of outrage from people who are firmly in the science fiction or fantasy camps. And I think the example of seeing a unicorn in either star wars or star trek would have an easy out - if explained it would presumably be explained as a "novel" lifeform from another planet or an engineered organism
