Of course Star Wars can be classified as science fiction. It meets the criteria of having elements not fully accepted by mainstream science. Unless the existence of alien honky tonks, or even the existence of alien races in general, is being taught in classrooms these days.

Its science fiction by all definitions applied to the genre

By those technical definitions, it may be considered science fiction. But thematically, it's really more of a western saga or tale of the knights of your. The narrative isn't based upon the technology itself, and there is no there is no threat or mystery based upon an alien threat (in the broader sense) or technological threat.

does it have to be live-action only?

because nausicaa is at the top of the list

this movie is crimminally underrated. the 5000+ page manga is even better.

1. Star Wars
2. 2001
3. Starship Troopers
4. Blade Runner
5. Wrath of Khan

Alien Nation gets an honorable mention here.

It was a good flick.

The problem was, most of the "original themes" were taken from Alien Nation.

They basically took Alien Nation, made the aliens uglier, and put them in camps (which they were in when they arrived in Alien Nation, per the intro).

Initially the U.S. government quarantined the aliens for several months and with the assistance of the Immigration and Naturalization Service each slave was given a human name.

good point.

i felt the same way about avatar. cameron blatantly ripped off other movies even going so far as to frame shots exactly the same as the ones he stole.

Umm...A LOT of directors do this. Tarantino is the biggest offender.

How can it be argued otherwise? It takes place in worlds that don't exist using science and technologies that don't exist. Its the very definition of science fiction.

it's more of a fantasy

if we're using that loose definition of science, then why is willow or lotr not sci-fi with magic essentially replacing science? as was said in the movie thor, they're basically teh same shite

the structure, themes, etc of the star wars trilogy are not that of science. it's a fantasy epic that happens to occur in a place with space travel

tarantino is like a music producer who is really good at remixing songs. it's his schtick, which is why nobody really cares to bring him up in these discussions

It would be like complaining about Wierd Al using other people's work.

Laser guns, faster than light travel, lightsabers, giant robots, droids, mass clonings, sentient AI, weird aliens. . .

Not sure what it is missing to be considered sci-fi. I would agree that it is ALSO fantasy.

or battle for terra:

quote:

His goal is to annihilate the Terrians so that the humans can turn Terra into the new Earth. He plans to drop a huge machine onto the planet's surface--called the Terraformer--which will create an Earthlike atmosphere. Stanton is sent to be in the first group of spacefighters designated to defend the Terraformer, while General Hemmer will go down to the planet's surface in the Terraformer to personally supervise the terraforming process.

After the humans drop the Terraformer machine onto the surface, it begins to replace the native gases with oxygen and nitrogen, which will asphixiate the aliens. The alien elders bring out all of the secretly-hidden military technologies from their secret base, and huge waves of alien glider-fighters attack the Terraformer machine. The human spacefighter ships begin a huge and bloody battle against the relatively low-tech alien glider-fighters, and the sky is filled with laser cannon fire and explosions.

Which is why I was always bewildered when fanboys fawned over Tarantino as some great director. You're not some genius when your life's work becomes one mashed-up homage.

He's just the fan/film nerd who made it big.

His creativity is not behind the camera but his writing ability - which is why I am glad he didn't get to direct True Romance.

I like Tarantino. I really like listening to him talk about movies though. I think he's even a better film critic than he is a director.
