Newman is one of my favorites. Butch is a great film, and The Hustler is a classic, but The Sting might be my favorite.

I was drawn more toward his Earlier, Smug, "Loner" Film Personae. I think he relied on his Charm, later in his Career.

Newman got to work with a ton of really great actors. Orson Wells, Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury, Liz Taylor, Burl Ives, Orson Wells, Lee Remick, Angela Lansbury, Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott, Geraldine Page, Fredric March, Richard Boone, Barbara Rush, George Kennedy, Robert Shaw, Eileen Brennan, Robert Redford, Richard Farnsworth, Sally Field, James Mason, Jack Warden, Charlotte Rampling, Tim Robbins, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Charles Durning, John Mahoney, Jessica Tandy, Bruce Willis, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Daniel Craig & an 18 year-old & 37 year-old (topless)Melanie Griffith
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (I love Goober's woman's "No-neck monsters" & have relatives that owned a cotton gin and everything else in a small town. My Uncle Lester was the Big Daddy of his town)
The Long Hot Summer (His future father-in-law is impressed when he scams his future brother-in-law & the neighborhood boys make cat calls. There's even an Ashley Wilkes type character in it)
HUD (The greatness of Patricia Neal and Newman going back & forth makes it a must see.)Sweet Bird of Youth is almost an East Coast version of the same movie with Newman's worthless character interacting with an innocent little brother.
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (Which scene is beter: Butch's fight or Sundance's poker game?)
Cool Hand Luke (George Kennedy after he eats the eggs, " Stand back you pedestrians, this ain't no automobile accident".
The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (after he shoots the guy who shot Lillie's poster, "I fine this man, uh, $50 for disturbing the peace and $10 for lying around".)
The Sting (Just the way they do Redford's character)
Absence of Malice (The end scene with Wilford Brimley is an all time great: We're gonna sit right here and talk about it. Now if you get tired of talking here, Mr. Marshal Elving Patrick there will hand you one of them subpoenas he's got stuck down in his pocket and we'll go downstairs and talk in front of the grand jury; Boy, the last time there was a leak like this, Noah built hisself a boat, just line after line in that one scene make it worth the watch)
The Verdict(His lows are so damn low in this & Charlotte Rampling's character is the coldest woman alive)

Bookmarked this thread. I just realized I have only seen three of his movies and liked them all and need to see some of the others.
Nobody's Fool (favorite of the 3 I have seen)
Cool Hand Luke
Color of Money

he's been in so many good movies.
Nobody's Fool (newer film)
The Long Hot Summer (older film)
Yeah, Butch Cassidy would probably be his best to me, but I really enjoy Nobody's Fool, it would be pretty close.

The Sting
The poker scene in the train is one of my favorite scenes of all time. Need to watch that movie again

"tough luck Lonnehan, but that's what you get for playing with your head up your arse"
"don't worry about it pal, we wouldn't let you play if you weren't a chump" (as he is laughing)
Butch and Sundance
when they are holed up at the end, he tells Sundance-
"this is no time for bravery, i'll let you go first"

Tisk Tisk still no love for Hombre up in here.

My favorite...
<<<<<<The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean
Lots of the others mentioned are better movies, but a great example of the Newman nonconformist attitude.

His Book was Titled "Horseman, Pass By".

I sure wish Homer Bannon had been working on Wall Street a few years back. I imagine Hud is a member of Congress by now. Probably trying to talk some half honset stooge into running for President. Doesn't matter who either side talks into running. Term limits is the only way to change the status quo. Unprincipled Man *brought to you by a registered independent (since 1977)
