X-Men: Apocalypse ***SPOILERS*** and Review Thread
I knew going into it who the Four Horsemen would be, so I expected Fox to deviate from the comics, but I can't get over Fox's continuity problems within its own films:

1) Nightcrawler first meets Jean, Storm and others in X-Men 2, but at the end of this film he decides to stay at the school with Storm.

2) Angel was the same age in X-Men 3 as he was in this film, which takes place 25+ years earlier, and he's in East Germany?

3) Xavier is all about restraining Jean's powers in X-Men 3, but he tells her to let go in this one. Is this what leads him to put up the barriers to contain Phoenix? Possibly, but it still raises some questions.

I get that Days of Future Past was supposed to un-F**k up what X-Men 3 did to the storyline, but the first two points alone are tough to ignore. It's like Fox is ignoring its own timelines. I almost wish Fox had stopped with DoFP.

No. DoFP didn't just fix X3, it changed the entire timeline. This is a completely new movie. See Wolverine's Origin Now and then. This is a similar place, similar time, different outcomes.

was a good take on the X-Men, actually.

That was my take walking out on it. It was the closest they've actually gotten the X-Men as far as I'm concerned. Yes there are X-Men movies I like more than this, but this was totally X-Men. I just don't know what the critics were wanting.

I loved the movie. The wife loves X-Men and she loved it aa well. Apocalypse was a pretty great villain IMO. Phoenix was done perfect, Wolverine cameo was a nice touch, Prof. X and his hair, etc. I enjoyed the movie a ton. We put on the first X-Men movie after we got back home and it's pretty consistent how they ended up connecting the two timelines. It's actually very good. It makes those old movies even better IMO.

This is incredible, since despite the 40% RT, we all seem to like it. The critics just fricked up here. It was simply a great X-Men movie, and they all think it should be Civil War for whatever reason. I don't see the argument on why this is worse than Age of Ultron.

It isn't. I can see it not being anyone's favorite X film, but it's a better, more cohesive movie than Ultron.

I went and saw this on Saturday.

It was a fun summer-popcorn movie, and was definitely a lot better than I expected. As others have mentioned, the weak part really is 2 of the 4 horsemen (psylocke and angel).

I liked the interlude with Magneto, showing how he had tried to live a "normal" life.

The big question for me going forward... is are they finally going to do a good job on cyclops and turn him into a leader?

Overall, good film. Definitely on Ultron level or better, and it also did well in calling back to the previous 2 films.

Agreed. We really liked it today. I think the critics had a stick up their arse. Because if CA:CW or BvS. Whatever. They're stupid.

Solid follow up to DoFP (my favorite)

ETA: Olivia Munn as Psyloche was the biggest waste of money in a film. Why hire a known name for 4 lines in a movie? Pissed me off because Betsy Braddock was fine as a frog hair and an awesome character.

I feel like I like them about the same. I enjoyed this X-men a lot and would watch it again. Ultron was sort of a miss in many ways for me but very enjoyable in others. Heck, I think I like this X-men better. Going to go see it again this week.

Part of the problem might be that Singer is getting into James Bond territory where (even though he does them well) he's hitting similar high notes with these movies. He knows what works: J-Law is popular, Wolverine popping in is great, Quicksilver scene is a must have, Magneto and Xavier have great chemistry...

Days of Future Past is to the X-Men films as the 2009 Star Trek was to the Star Trek films

The first three X-films are no longer valid, nor is either Wolverine film.

Loved the movie. Don't get why the critics gave it so much hate. I thought it was perfect third movie to a trilogy. The final fight scene was awesome.

Nah, don't go down that line of thinking here. X-Men did have a ton of problems, even if the end product is still a good watch. Much of the acting was bad, the first hour felt like too much set-up time. The motivations of all of the Horseman was hackneyed (outside of maybe Angel actually). There's no clear hero in this one, and as usual, Singer creates some thin side characters out of great source material.

That and Apocalypse spends most of his time looking and/or pointing and monologuing. He could have been a bit better.

It's about as good, I would say. AoU has just surpassed Thor 2/IM3 as the Marvel movie to pick on because it's not "as good" as the rest. AoU is better than that.

I enjoyed the movie a lot.

Michael Fassbender was fantastic. It wasn't as good as First Class or Days of Future Past, but it was still a good movie.

I don't see anyway critics can hate the movie.

Yea, I really don't understand the critics hate for this movie. Some aspects of the movie were great, i.e Fassbender (always a great job) and the Quicksilver scene once again. But they killed it liked it was BvS, which it wasn't. Whatever though, I thought it was a good X-Men movie and it was enjoyable for me.

He wasn't a bad villain, but I think they did a poor job of showing you how powerful he is.

I also could sort of understand why he recruited Psylocke because she said she could locate powerful mutants, but he probably should have killed her after her first recruit was Angel, because in this movie all he could do was fly. He pretty much got his arse kicked by Nightcrawler.

Has there been a superhero movie villain who's done more damage than Apocalypse? I know you're talking about his personal power, but he was well on his way to destroying mankind when he got Phoenixed.
