Magic being diagnosed with HIV essentially brought an end to Showtime. The Lakers had just made the finals vs the Michael Jordan led bulls earlier in the year.
Yeah I know not sure what that has to do with what I said

kinda like it. I remember that day vividly and it is part of the tragedy. So leading off with it is a nice move.
I wasn’t complaining about it being part of the show, obviously that’s the driving force of the overall plot of the show in the long run
It just felt weird to throw the audience into the deep water of this insanely emotional and important event in the story as the first scene in the show, but then never once touch anything close to that same note for the rest of the episode, going as far as to undercut any scenes that could possibly have tension with either an immediate joke, a 4th wall break, or both just to reassure the audience that this is all still great and fun
Not saying it has to be the Wire or anything, but it needed one more scene atleast to remind you of the actual backbone of the story or atleast remind you that they have that card to play, or it’s going to feel really weird when they try to force it later
If the plan is to stick to that style and narrative technique for the whole show, I think it’s going to wear thin very quickly for people- even the ones who really enjoyed it in the first episode. Which is again why something like Ballers comes to mind, where there’s big names associated with it on both sides of the camera, that’s extremely stylish and looks amazing, and has some really good actors/performances, but ultimately there wasn’t anything below the surface
But hey it’s the first episode, still way too early to be sure of anything and I’ll still be watching

I hadn't paid any attention to this and thought it was a documentary series. I clicked on it out of curiosity and first thing I saw was John C. Reilly, kept watching and I'm completely hooked. This is one of the few things I've ever seen that bothers to get actors that look remotely close to their real life counterparts. I love anything 70s style and I'm hooked on this shite

He was really great. The best part of the show so far. I’m not sold on the rest of it yet but will give it a few episodes.

I thought this show would have some traffic this morning. I enjoyed episode 2.
Didn't realize Jonas Hill was the director until I saw the credits last night.

I chuckled last week when I saw that the Red Auerbach in the news footage was Michael Chiklis. Then he showed up this week as a featured player and killed it.
Chiklis is so underrated. He's entertaining in pretty much everything.

I'm no Laker fan by any means but the depiction of Jerry West as the depressed alcoholic jerk is crazy over the top in the first two episodes. The guy is one of the most respected NBA executives over the past 2 decades. As entertaining as this may be to portray a living person like this I wonder how open it makes them to a lawsuit.

Kinda meh episode 2 to me
Also, the other chick Magic is hooking up with, not Cookie, is the actress who plays College-age Beth in This is Us.

I looked around and saw alot of folks pissed off about his portrayal but haven't found anything from him personally. But I agree, it makes him look like a madman.

Just finished episode two. Now I know they've taken some liberties with the truth for this show, but so far it's been pretty fricking entertaining.

And one of his signatures is breaking the fourth wall to simplify a complex topic to the audience in an entertaining way, and in that first episode he did that in almost every scene and couldn’t go longer than like 2 minutes before using it again, which is strange because the stuff he’s explaining is completely unnecessary, like I don’t really need to be told explicitly that basketball was different in the 70s and how it can be fun to watch with more superstars or explicitly state every characters thoughts and motivations upon introduction.
yeah, this is pretty much keeping me from watching. christ thats annoying. it's one thing to do that for credit default swaps and collateralized debt obligation, but we don't need that for a fricking basketball show
