Charlie's mom was a single mother. She had four seemingly invalid parents.
I say seemingly, because the moment the possibility of some small enjoyment arose, Grandpa Joe stops faking his disability, gets up, and literally dances around the house.
He let the family starve and a little boy grow up without a father figure, just so he could lay in bed all day and smoke a pipe.

Could you imagine the smell in that house with those 4 old people shitting and pissing on each other all day? It's gotta suck when you have a dry spot and somebody's stream of pee comes sliding down towards you.

The grandfathers are British WWI veterans and the family subsists on their WWI service pensions. Grandpa Joe isn't fully disabled, just old and shellshocked with a bum leg.

This is absolutely true, but Grandpa Joe was not nearly as evil as Willy Wonka. Wonka killed those kids—granted, they arguably deserved it. Wonka “claims” various things regarding the disappearance of each child, but you damn well know they were ne’er seen nor heard from again. Willy Wonka was a serial killer. The boat ride scene is a look into his sinister, yet beautiful mind.
