Man it’s as if different people like different things or something.

I don’t plan on seeing it but I’m not looking down at people who are going.

For the same reason someone might want to go on a rollercoaster. It's just a fun entertaining ride. Not everything has to be deep and serious.

1. Because it will be an absolutely immersive experience in an IMAX theater.

2. Because my wife wants to see it.

3. Because my children want to see it.

4. Because its nice to get out of the house and shut out the daily stress for a bit.

Because you stick your finger in your butthole to fall asleep at night.

Pretty easy to figure if you saw the original in theaters. It’s meant for that medium. Avatar was a visual spectacle and still the most immersive 3D experience ever. To the point it’s disappointing literally no other movie has used those elements to effect we know is possible.

Not really surprising many of us wanna get the experience again, especially while having time off around the holidays.

This.

My wife normally cannot sit through a whole movie without getting up and going to the bathroom or something. But when we saw avatar in the theater in 3-D she did not move at all once the movie started. It’s a rather long movie and I swear she didn’t even shift in her seat once the immersion of 3-D kicked in. Will definitely go and see this next one soon.

Such a bizarre question considering how many other movies there are. This hip thing of hating on Avatar is just dumb.

Your average American is dumb as a box of rocks and has no idea what good movies are. So, you now have all the marvel and dc atrocities, the women as badasses, fast and furious, Jurassic nonsense, etc etc. Most movies now have terribly obvious fake backgrounds, too much CGI, terrible stories, and bad acting.

Alright I’ll play along, the story is nothing special but it looks like a visual masterpiece and also the 3D should be amazing. Also it’s a good movie to watch while stoned

When the first Avatar came out...

Me: I just read an article about people becoming so consumed by Avatar that they're suffering from depression because they can't actually live in that world. I can't believe that anyone could get obsessed with that movie.

Coworker: My husband and I have seen it four times.

Me: Not that it's not a fun movie...

This is such a fart-sniffing take. I like art-house and foreign flicks as much as the next guy, but I'm also not so far up my own arse that I can't comprehend the emergence of those grand action movies. Companies have built giant immersive theaters all over the country to make movies an experience. Bubblegum action movies take advantage of that system and environment.

With the proliferation of large 4k tvs in households across the country, most people are not going to spend a bunch of money to watch a character-driven drama on a big screen for $20. This action blockbusters are what keeps the lights on at most theaters. That allows extra screens for deeper, "better" movies. Advocating against big action movies is effectively advocating against the continued existence of the theater experience. That's a debate for a different thread, though.

I actually have questions like this from time to time, especially with music, movies and TV.

So I was giving him the benefit of the doubt.

There are people out there who have had severe depression becuase they can't live in the Avatar world. Supposed to be happier now that the sequel is here.

I'm waiting for Avatar 5: Blue Dream!

What killed the "theater experience" is a combination of rising prices, streaming and complete takeover by shitty big budget crap like Avatar which killed investment into better cinema fare by investors who wouldn't know quality if it bit off their johnsons. This is why we're only just now starting to see the slightest bit of production fatigue on the WELL played out comic book superbuddies.

Avatar is just a stupid video game brought to a theater. It's barely got a story, it needs 3D to even generate interest and most people - as you said - treat it more like an amusement park attraction than a movie. I'm glad you enjoy it, but as a movie, it's forgettable.

It is hilarious that this got it's own call out in that group.

Because I've never seen a James Cameron movie I didn't find entertaining.
