It's not like movie-going audiences were clamoring for a Shazam film.

I'm glad that it's been critically received well and it appears to be a hit amongst fans of the character.

But let's get real, this character was too corny and doesn't have the brand recognition to appeal to general audiences, especially in a film series that has a black eye that it will never recover from.

I'm actually surprised it's not doing better. I didn't think it was very good, but it seemed very marketable with what people seem to want in superhero movies these days. Plus it had great reviews. I'm kind of surprised.

They should have waited until the summer to release it.

They shoulda waited until Christmas. Especially since both the past and present of the movie takes place during Christmas time.

We'll be debating about whether or not it's a Christmas movie like Die Hard in 20 years

It's 100% a Christmas movie. Billy learns that he needs family to overcome the world.

Aquaman just finished in the top 20 all time at the box office and you are acting like people still hate DC. They’ve already announced a sequel. Worst case scenario for them is breaking even and unless it completely shuts the bed this weekend, it will have that come Sunday morning, maybe Monday at the latest.

Hell of a hold this weekend for Shazam.

quote:

Along with a #1 finish, WB and New Line also secured the runner up position with Shazam!, which topped the past two weekends and held on very well in its junior frame, dipping -29% for an estimated $17.3 million as the film's domestic cume now tops $121 million. Internationally, the film added another $22 million this weekend, pushing its overseas cume to $201.5 for a worldwide gross that now tops $322 million.

The visuals of Levi in the suit in marketing just looked too cheesy for me. I'm not 100% sure I would have seen it early in theaters otherwise, but once I saw those, it was a given that I'd wait till it comes out on the small screen.

When I talked with most of my twentysomething friends they didn't know what Shazam was all about.

There was no girl power or demographic hook to motivate people who weren't fans of the comics from the 70s (and earlier) to show up - and it was wedged between Marvel's CM and IW products. So I think it actually did fine.

FWIW I kinda liked the cute commercials but still haven't made the time to see it. I will eventually in a dollar theater or on cable and that is probably about my level of interest for the franchise.

Went and saw it last night with my wife. Enjoyable. Not earth shattering. But very enjoyable for a comic book movie.

Too bad the DCEU is no more (I'm in the minority here, but I loved the Snyder-verse). I think Billy Batson would have been a good addition to the heavier characters of the Big 3.

Agreed...took the kids, and we really enjoyed it. Nice to have a superhero who isn't broody or a SJW.

It's still there, it's just the uncle that you talk about but don't invite for dinner.

The Big 3 for Billy's corner of the universe is going to be Shazam, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. I don't think the Birds of Prey, Suicide Squad, and New Gods stuff will bleed over into their areas.

Horrible marketing. The first trailer made the movie look spectacularly bad. Like, 47 Ronin bad.

Made almost 2 million again this Monday. Almost equaling last Monday's total. The movie is going to hit 150 million domestically and probably 450 million total, which would be great for a film this size.
