Is it their agent or something? I would get confused. Does anyone still call them by their birth name? Do they think it will make them more money? I dont think I would do it, I like my name.

A lot of those names are nightmares. It's pretty easy to see why.

Is Jenna Elfman the only one who opted to sound Jewish?

Some of them change it because when they join SAG, there is already someone in the union with their name.

Albert Brooks changed it probably because he got tired of going by Albert Einstein.

It makes them more marketable. What sounds better: Tom Cruise or Thomas Mapother?

Alot of those are just nicknames they've probably grown up with. Then the rest of them are Americanized versions of ethnic names. That's been going on for a long time. Ellis Island used to change immigrants names when they arrived to New York so they could be easier to pronounce by Americans.

I thought the same thing. He technically did not change his name, but made the spelling more marketable.

The usual reasons are "Too many people with that name", "Shortened version / nickname", "Too ethnic", and "Looks bad on a marquee", though there are a few cases which are for other reasons.

For instance, there are a number of actors who picked a different stage name because their birth name was already used by someone else in the Screen Actor's Guild.

There's also Nic Cage, who ditched the Coppola name in an attempt to keep away charges of nepotism.
