Why did the entire bridge fall in Temple of Doom

Because it's a movie.

The rope was a loop

Why not just cut the bridge from both sides when Indy was surrounded? It's clear that Indy would have died from the fall, and they could just retrieve the stone right after. It's even mentioned that the stone would be found, but Indy would not be found. Why even bother surrounding him on the bridge?

Yes, but all the pressure would be on the remaining rope, which snapped. Of course, it should have spun out first, relieving itself of the pressure, but that's a different point.

Because its a lot easier to get it from him now, up there, than to have to slog around down below with the Crocodile's to find it? Would you rather I hand you a precious thing or throw it into a river with crocodiles?
