re: Why are the SW prequels fair game for criticism, but TFA somehow sacred?

SW has a lot of elements from westerns and Samurai movies,

Lucas is a self claimed Kirosawa nut. Google the Kirosawa tropes from A New Hope. Darth Vader looks straight out of a shogun.

And the dialog was a million times better than what we got here

You're allowing your mind to wax poetic, man. Dialogue was no better or worse than anything in A New Hope.

What makes me mad is if Episode 8 takes on a darker tone (which it invariably will), the bitching will commence that "they're just copying Empire."

Would seem Rey is the prime candidate for this...

But we can all come up with the grandest themes and literally no one will know for another two years.

I already can't wait and that is why I think this one is a huge success. I didn't have that feeling at all after Episode 1. You could argue it was inherently doomed anyway being a "prequel" to the best trilogy ever.

All of this is what makes Star Wars so divisive, yet so unifying. Great discussion and really has people buzzing regardless of how they felt about the new movie.

Great discussion

I don't know about that. Most of the discussion threads have devolved into people shitting on the movie. I want to discuss the Force, Rey being a Skywalker, and what could have happened to allow Ben to fall to the dark side. Also, where are Force ghost Yoda and Obiwan? Where is Force ghost Anakin?

The actors for Rey and Poe were good, and I thought Finn was ok too
Ridley and Boyega were good, but Isaac didn't have enough to do, IMO. He just kind of pops in and out of the movie at random times, and his "disappearance" story was a little too convenient, and corny.

Rey is with Chewie (who's extremely well conceived and performed imho)
Yeah. His "argh-ing" was top notch.

Luke, on a gorgeous windswept island.
That's the gayest thing I've ever read.

Finn has a personal vendetta against Storm Troopers and Ren, as well as a newfound sense of courage and an obligation to Solo. He likely will be looking to prove himself, after being the cowardly lion this movie; and the two guys look to have good buddy chemistry going on
He's there to be Rey's future boyfriend, because the "activists" at Disney couldn't resist. He really has no other purpose, and his sudden change of heart motivation was forced and ham-handed.

It's just a really poorly-written movie. Great effects, though. Pew pew pew and what not.

What? I'm not an expert on military history, so I don't know, but she definitely looks and sounds just like Bruce Jenner.

I have no problem with criticism. The problem is that some so-called critics in here aren't comfortable with counteranalysis. Certainly you're entiitled to your opinion but you aren't entitled to render your opinion free from its own criticism.

And a lot of the posters who are critical of the film on here don't exactly give you indepth anaylsis.

"Leia is old and looks like Bruce Jenner"

"Driver has big ears"

"Rey is a girl and that's stupid."

"It's just like A New Hope because of desert and stuff."

It's far from a flawless film but most of the criticsm seems contrived and preconceived. But that's to be expected with people who crave attention.

I've pretty much disagreed with everything you've said but this.

Amazing hahaha.

Totally disagree. People have been quoting SW for 40 years. I don't think this one will be quoted at all.

BB, I like you man I really do. But in your hate-lust for all things with social commentary, you're seeing it where it's not even there.

The OT was made by artists. This was made by hacks and suits at Disney.

Your view of the OT is a little too romantic. Lucas, as proven by the rest of hat he's done, is no artist. He's a visionary for sure, but artist he is not.

If anyone critical about TFA was honest, they would be as critical about the OT. And if you're critical of the OT, you realize how mediocre, or even bad, they were as films. Fact.

Truth: Their experience goes beyond that, but getting critical has to do away with that otherwise the counter argument can be made about TFA as well....the experience is all that matters. Well if it does, then it was a fine film.

more like, when 59 years you reach (after spending good chunks of your 20's snorting half of Columbia with Belushi and screwing everyone on set), look as good you will not

I agree with the new death star, it's just lazy to include this yet again. What was your problem with Finn thou? I had my issues with the film but I thought Boyega was just fine.

Boyega was fine, but they gave him NOTHING to work with. I posted in the official discussion, but Finn's character was the result of them needing the PC outlet, he needed to almost be the damsel in distress, without actually being kidnapped. He was a massive wimp, and that was by design, and that was the problem. It's something he can fix, but as a character, SFP is right, he's one of the worst.

Because it's injected into everything now.

I go to the movies for entertainment, to get away from the shitty world and it's shitty problems. I don't need to be indoctrinated by narcissistic Hollywood dipshits.

I never even noticed his ears. But his schnozzola is enormous.

Looks nothing like the offspring of Han and Leia.

He was comical looking. Something a villain should not be. Hell, anakin looked far more evil than he did

You only see that shite because you want to see it. You need something to bitch about, so you make up something that really isn't there.

So much butthurt from a bunch of wannabe critics. Most of this is the same crap that you can see on 20 different sites. Regurgitated nonsense that they read elsewhere and decided to be one of the cool kids and hate the movie. Think Comic Book Guy.

This movie was good. They added elements from the OT to connect the old folks with the new. As far as the rehash of "death stars", what else did you expect them to build? They built two already. This is the extension of the same tech. The tech hasn't changed much. They are still using the same tech as 30 years prior. If they had gone another way with the "ultimate weapon" the rest of the tech would look dated. One major paradigm shift in military tech tends to filter through the rest.

As far as Finn is concerned, some seem to have an issue that he worked in sanitation. Who do you think takes out the trash in the military? Soldiers do. Why would this be a stretch? Besides, being in sanitation would give him access to many areas that are not visited by the guy that works in hangar 2.

My 2 cents.

I didn't read a single review before hand. Good or bad. I went to the movie with no pre-conceived notions and full of hope. It was over the top. Visually stunning. Poorly cast and written and acted for the most part. Definite money grab, just like the prequels, and Disneyfied.

They have a fleet of star destroyers. The largest army in the galaxy even after the death Star was blown up.

New leaders would have arisen and you'd think that they'd have more sense than to say "you know those giant arse laser moons with inexplicable weak points that keep getting blown up and wiping out vast swaths of our forces?

Let's build a bigger, dumber one. That eats Suns."
