Whiplash should have won the Oscar for Best Picture over Birdman

I finally got around to watching Whiplash (after loving La La Land and wanting to see the director's other movie) and it was simply phenomenal.
Absolute master story telling that had me from the start. JK Simmons' Oscar was well deserved, and good for Miles Teller for shaking off the Fantastic Four flop with a great performance as a kid who is consumed at being great, even it may cost you your humanity in the end.
The ending is what really sold me. They left it a tad open to interpretation, but I think it was safe to say that Simmons had finally found his "Bird" in Teller.
With Whiplash and La La Land, Damien Chazelle is on his way to being one of the next great directors. And the dude is only 31. Insane.
So in review of the movies that were nominated Best Picture that year, I would rank them:
Whiplash
American Sniper
The Theory of Everything
Birdman
Boyhood
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Selma

All those movies won Best Picture?

I haven't seen Whiplash or Theory of Everything, but American Sniper over Birdman? HELL NO.
Birdman was one of the best cinematic experiences I've ever had. The cinematography + the acting + the story is top notch for many years, not just the one it won best picture for.

I didn't understand Birdman, didn't see what all the hype was about...maybe I should watch it again?

I don't really have anything bad to say about Birdman but Whiplash is an all around better movie and should have one.

Whiplash was better than Birdman.
American Sniper was frickin horrible.

Yeah, it wasn't very good at all...unless you're a mouth breather.

I'd put Theory of Everything, Imitation Game, and Selma all above American Sniper.
I didn't get the love American Sniper received. It was good, but not great. Clint Eastwood has directed way better films.

I watched it like 5 times in the first week I discovered it. I was freaking crazy about it.
The mental struggle Keaton goes through is what really grabbed me

Agreed. Whiplash is one of the most solid movies I've ever seen. You could put together a creative writing unit based solely on what Chazelle accomplished in that film.
I did love Birdman. Great movie that took a lot of creative risks. But Whiplash is an all timer for me.
Birdman did have the extra boost from its "meta" elements. The Academy is crazy about films that glamorize the industry.

Whiplash, Birdman, and The Imitation Game were all top notch. Whiplash was just about flawless. I really enjoyed Birdman, but the ending tainted it for me. Imitation Game was a very well made film telling a deep and compelling story.
I loved Boyhood, but that was a more personal reaction. I liked Grand Budapest, but not nearly as much as Rushmore or Tenenbaums.
American Sniper was terrible. Felt completely phony. I didn't last an hour. Loved both The Hurt Locker and Lone Survivor, so it wasn't a genre thing. Just a really poorly made film that wasn't the least bit engaging.

***POSSIBLE SPOILER***
did you not like the on-stage portion of the ending, or the hospital part?

Grand Budapest holds up better than anything on that list.
By far.
By far.
