For those that have not had a chance to see this little gem, take a look before casting your vote.

The Christmas special was goofy and it knew it. TLJ was bad but thought it was groundbreaking.

No one says "Laser Swords" in the Christmas Special, therefore it is automatically better.

This, I can watch the Star Wars Christmas Special and laugh at it. TLJ had a major Maoist subplot that is trying to indoctrinate kids. At least when Lucas more subtly did it, he had a good quote to go with it and it surprisingly fitting to go along with how the critics responded to The Last Jedi:

"So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause."

A Laser is light.

A sword is a saber.

Laser sword = lightsaber

When you factor in how much was spent on it, I would say TLJ.

The whole point of the Space Opera is to play it completely straight. Everyone has to buy into it. As soon as you start breaking the 4th wall and playing into the real life jokes people say or the colloquialisms that come from it into daily life, you ruin that.

The laser swords comment was just that.

TLJ. 2 years waiting for questions to be answered that were not delivered. Characters that have 40 years of history and development thrown out the window. Characters that did not get developed and no training of the ones with the Force. Absurd dialogue and plot. Overall mess that did not feel like a Star Wars movie.

I did too when I was a kid. The Christmas Special is pure, goofy 80's product exploitation. Some of it can be charming.

No it isn't.

The Jedi in the prequels were all raised in the temple. They all speak in a very formal tone because of their upbringing. Luke was raised on a farm. He has been isolated for a period of time. He doesn't give a shite about formalities.

I've avoided any spoilers so far, and I probably won't see TLJ until next week when I am off from work for the rest of the year.

That said, and without spoiling anything about the story:

-What is the source of everyone's frustration/resentment/general pissiness regarding this movie?

A) the story didn't play out the way they had hoped?
B) the mechanics of the movie in general were bad (i.e. editing, storytelling, etc ala Batman v Superman)?
C) SJW fluff being forced upon the viewer?
D) other?

To say the story goes in an unexpected direction is an understatement.

Plotholes to the extreme. It's also one of the worst edited blockbusters I've ever seen. A fan could (and almost certainly will) do better.

Biggest in a mainstream film I can think of in a while. It really goes into Maoism territory.

quote:

D) other?

All of the above

yikes...

Thank you for the concise response. There are no less than 10-15 Star Wars threads on the first page at any given time, and I cannot open any of them for fear of being spoiled. I appreciate your ability to summarize the general consensus without giving anything away.

I enjoyed the movie.

That being said,

B.

There was too much conflict. Entire plot lines could be cut and the movie still makes sense.
God armor for the main characters.

Those are my main issues.

Without giving anything away at all I think the bigger issue is that George Lucas is a Storyteller first and Disney is a corporation. Lucas did things to make the story better from his viewpoint and Disney is all about the "Benjamins"..The story for Disney is not as important and the $$$$$.
