After seeing the 100 movies that don't suck list I'll add "the shawshank redemption". I was shocked to see it listed in teh top 10 (including apparently by a lot of people who are probably movie snobs).

It isn't a bad movie, above average on the whole for sure... maybe even top 5-10 for the year that it was released. But top 10 of all time? Holy fricking crap

I like a couple of the actors in SR and their performances but it is so formulaic I am just really really surprised to see people put in in their top 10 movies of all time. To me it seemed roughly equivalent to Titanic in terms of writing and overall quality.

Inception - well made from a technical standpoint; but utter nonsense that people spent waaaayyyyy too much time on trying to analyze.

Boondock Saints - just bad

Avatar - nice to look at for 30 minutes or so but that's all

Anything with Adam Sandler - except Punch Drunk Love

LOTR - all of 'em

This board has me convinced that I need to re-watch No Country... and Children of Men because I was completely bored throughout these films, but many hail them as incredible. I really enjoyed the scenes in 2001... with Hal and the crew and when the guy was seeing his life "flash" before his eyes, but I got pissed off watching 15 minute intervals of spaceships doing ballet and psychedelic bullshite. I still love Kubrick tho.
Great thread.

You should probably get new friends if everyone around you thinks these are good and you are the only one who thinks they suck...

I hate Gone With the Wind with a passion usually reserved for child molesters and prog rock bands. It's not just a bloated, self-indulgent mess, it is a virulently racist film that negatively impacted actual political policy. The myth of the Lost Cause has done more harm than just about anything else in American culture. GWTW is nothing but a justification for Jim Crow.

I loathe that movie. /insert Madeline Kahn quote from Clue here.

Try living in Atlanta, man. Here is where I really got the opportunity to experience having to deal with people's constant praise of this movie whenever the topic came up.

My local bar had a GWTW night, where the showed it on a projection screen. I refused to partake in the drink special and simply hung out and pointed out the same things that you mentioned in your post to any who would listen.

I love that movie but not as much as I love Selznick's 40s mega technicolor production, Duel in the Sun.

Which may even be more "racist".

Scorsese & I are in agreement on it's greatness!

Lebowski

Not saying these are all piles of crap but I've had no desire to watch them again.
