When did Breaking Bad become a sensation?

It blows my mind it first came out when I was in 8th grade. I feel like I didn’t hear about it until I was a freshman in college. I watched up until the mid season 5 break which was all that was out. Then I watched the last 8 episodes live my sophomore year. Clearly it was a great show every season with very little fluff or wasted time. When did it really make it big time though? Was it not until it came onto Netflix? Immediately and I just missed it?

I didn’t start watching it live until about the 3rd or 4th season. I think it was probably this board’s rave reviews that finally got me to start it. It’s the GOAT to me

Once they put it on Netflix it blew up. I remember hearing “binge watch” for the first time regarding breaking bad.

I think around season 3. I remember watching the premier and trying to talk to friends about it and no one knew wtf I was talking about

4th season. I watched it in one gulp once the show wrapped up. Some a-hole on this board spoiled Ozymandias halfway through my watch through which pissed me off, but I won’t spoil here in case someone hasn’t watched this masterpiece.

AMC was sure lucky to be able to license that show from Sony

Somewhere between season 3 and 4. AMC putting it on Netflix was a great move by them

I’d agree with most here, around season 3 or so. It hit its stride in season 2 and never let up. Gus Fring’s entry kicked it up several notches. I distinctly remember the last 2 seasons being VERY common water cooler talk among most people. Maybe not quite as widespread as Lost or GoT, but not far off.

It must have been gearing up for season 5 because AMC had a marathon on. I just happened to see the pilot was coming on in like 5 minutes so I figured why not. Didn't move my arse all night

I caught up to it about the time p2 s5 kicked off.
Did an immediate rewatch with my brother and mom bc they hadn't seen it

I remember the previews for Season 1 on AMC when I was jr, high(ish) age maybe, when watching Fear Fest one year, IIRC (maybe it was a different season). I definitely watched an episode of the first season live but didn't really start watching it until a few years later. It is better as a binge watch imo, as a few parts played better on rewatch while binging. I remember it being hyped up from the get go I feel like.

Yep. I hit “record all” and decided to watch the first few episodes then I would decide if I wanted to record the rest of the marathon or not.
I recorded the rest of the marathon

I remember watching it all from random streams I found online before the 2nd part of season 5. Then it all came on Netflix not long after. Working to find decent quality episodes on my laptop was part of the fun.

It got popular during season 3 but totally blew up during season 4.

I didn't watch it live. Saw previews and wanted to check it out but didn't. Didn't start watching live until I caught the episode in Tucos office and that hooked me. Started from the beginning after watching that one.

I remember being at the beach in summer 2011 and seeing a preview for season 4 during the college World Series. Hadn’t heard of it but started watching it on ninjatv or whatever that site was because it wasn’t on Netflix yet.
Got completely caught up in time to watch season 4 live and got my roommates to start watching. By the time season 5 came out I think everybody had at least heard of it.

I heard the Hard Line guys on the Ticket (Dallas sports radio station) talk about it a couple of episodes in, so I checked it out, and watched all of it from the first season. You could watch the ones you missed on the AMC website back then.
Corby Davidson talked Mike Rhyner into watching it. I heard Mike telling him he was hooked. They'd talk about it on the show a good bit that first season. It was after Greg Williams had left the show. Corby, Mike and sometimes Gordon Keith, were on there together when Breaking Bad came out.
ETA: We had great season long threads on here the first couple of seasons. I had them bookmarked three or four laptops ago. Can't find them searching Google.
Some attention whore started doing a thread every Monday for the next episode around season four.
Found one of the first posts for an episode. The guy started doing them for season 3.
Breaking Bad - Season 3 - Episode 1 Thread
I went to the last page of my posts on this board. It only goes back to 2009. The oldest thread there is a Breaking Bad one, but not one of the two season long ones.

Greatest cold opening scene to a pilot ever.

I had barely even heard of it before starting it on Netflix several years ago. I was hooked from the opening scene and watched several episodes a day until I finished. It’s my favorite TV show ever.
