FWIW I'm not really mad about the changes to Perrin and Mat's backstories, it makes sense to give them texture early because in the books they are sort of flat and their characters get more depth later.
Very true. None of the kids have much personality at first. Develops as the books go on and they get older. And then we all like Mat the best.

It is getting bombed on Amazon's own rating system.

This is completely untrue

Never made it past the first 90 pages of the first book. So, I will watch the episodes tonight to see what is up. Glad this came out today.

Mat- rascal with a heart of gold
Perrin- thoughtful goliath
Rand- generally generic "nice guy" that the reader could imprint upon
Nyn- ferociously faithful, strong-willed youngster raised to a station earlier than most, always fighting the "too-young" stereotype
Egw- less fleshed-out early on, mainly just Rand's presumed future wife and Nyn's sidekick
All five and the entire TR- wholesome country folk
That could have all been established in the first 5 minutes of the show.
ETA, Though not spoilers, I keep forgetting which thread I am posting on. This is not a "compare the show to the books" thread. Carry on.

Example...they showed us nothing about Rand taking his dad's sword, but later he has the sword
I actually wondered about this. As a non-book reader it was clear the sword had some significance. When his father first grabs it to fight the orc (forgot what they’re called), they do a long close up on the hilt, so I assumed the sigil had some sort of significance and was waiting to get some history on it.

Not sure if this would be spoiler territory, but don’t think so. I’m just curious if him killing his wife/betrothed or whatever was in the book??
That was a pretty shocking moment and a trauma that I would think would define the character going forward.

I will answer in a way that has nothing to do with anything future in the story. In the book, he did not have a wife, fiance, or GF at all at this point in the story. That is a new addition to the plot.

This should not be discussed in this thread, JMO.
This thread SHOULD strictly be for judging the show on its own merits with no book discussion whatsoever.

I watched the first 2 without reading the books. This show is absolute garbage.
Absolute garbage is a little harsh, but this show is definitely mediocre. I watched the first two episodes last night, and the production quality, acting, set design, etc is all pretty bad. In terms of quality this is more on par with the cheesy Netflix young adult fantasy shows like Shadow and Bone than it is Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings. Hell, Shadow and Bone might actually be better.
My main takeaway was wondering how the hell Amazon managed to spend so much money on this, because it definitely doesn't show in the finished product.

Da frick??? Please tell me this is a joke and doesn't really happen in the show. I plan to watch tonight, but tonight may very well be my one and done with this.

Just watch. You'll see that you're reacting to something pretty small.

I watched the first episode this morning, it ended exactly where I’m at in the book so I may read a little further before watching the next few. I don’t think it’s fair that every fantasy series from here on out has to be compared to GOT, but I guess that is the new standard for fantasy series, as LOTRs is for fantasy movies. No it’s not going to be GOT level, especially production wise but I enjoyed the first episode and will continue to watch. It brings to question if it would feel/look any better production wise if the GOAT HBO had produced it.

Perrin being married to start the story is anything but small. Perring being married and killing his wife (or even just her dying) is a big step further from being small. Yes I do plan to watch, and maybe what I am reading here is not exactly what is happening; however, so far it seems quite significant.

i think saying "Perrin wasn't married in the books" is not a spoiler.
i'm completely against spoilers, but that seems a stretch.

I’m enjoying the heck out of this. I don’t care what anyone says.
