Aren’t they basically the same concept? Eccentric, Sherlock Holmes-like powers of deduction from a guy who is a police consultant who has a partner that doesn’t quite get them who represents the general population? Now that I think about it Castle seems To fit the same bill. Can someone tell me where I’m wrong?

Monk is the sort of show I’d watch with my mother when I was in high school

I am actually watching an episode of Pysch right now. I basically have it continuous rewatch state to put on when I don’t feel like watching something else.

The Mentalist takes itself the most seriously - Psych the least.

I would agree with this. Psych is very fun to watch and enjoy watching it on many rewatches.

Monk is about human frailty...Psych is the opposite, full of bravado.

All three have the same detective skills with a little bit of different flavor

Psych - Elder Millennial or younger GenX age range. Lazy and never really grew up. Lies about being psychic so he can start a detective agency

Monk - Detective on the spectrum whos wife was offed making him have a mental breakdown

Mentalist - Cocky former magician/Carny whos wife was offed by a serial killer.

Psych and Monk are excellent all the way through. Mentalist wasn't bad but fell off the rails after they revealed who the serial killer was.

And hey they just redid the show again and Called it "Will Trent" this time the main character has dyslexia and grew up in foster care.

While all this is true, I would likely describe Psych as a best buddies, father son, circle of friends, relationship comedy-drama with more focus on the comedy part with witty referenced based humor and a solid charming cast wrapped in mostly murder of the week episodes. Although there are solid recurring storylines that are awesome.

Generally light hearted and pokes fun at many things including itself.

That's fair

I guess another way to put it would be

Psych - Comedy Centric with focus on relationships between friends and family with some drama mixed in

Monk - 50/50 Mix between Comedy and Drama with focus on navigating the world with mental health issue

Mentalist - Drama heavy light on the Comedy with focus on a running revenge story.

CBS has a new show this year with a "female Monk" character called "Elsbeth". Since I did not like Monk, I won't watch this either.

Yep, I like that and think it’s a good way of putting it.

They revealed it mid-season and it was so anticlimactic. It felt rushed like they were afraid of getting cancelled so they hurried up and ended that story line.

Those puppies were released in the low budget movie Angelblade.

Just a FYI.

The Mentalist is a procedural cop show with a slightly different flavor than your standard cop shows, kind of like Bones, or as you mentioned, Castle. Now that I think about it, I guess there's an entire sub-genre of Cop Consultant dramas.

The other 2 don't fit your comparison at all. It would be like comparing Scrubs to Grey's Anatomy.

Monk is a comedic version of a procedural cop show. While Monk is brilliant at solving crimes, you watch to see a neurotic germaphobe comically struggle with having to operate in the real world.

Psych is just one of the GOAT comfort shows. An ensemble cast with perfect comedic chemistry dropping pop culture references and guest star appearances to hit GenXers with the perfect amount of nostalgia. Procedural cop show is just the setting. It is more closely related to Chuck than the Mentalist, who clearly stole the idea of Psych but said "what if we made this an actual cop show?"

All 3 shows are good BTW, you just would get different things from watching them.

Psych is an all time classic.

the pop culture references, the witty banter....

the only thing I can think of close to psych in style would be Chuck

Almost has Letterkenny or Community vibes at times with a lot of Scrubs energy.
