BOB definitely. I enjoyed pacific but really never cared about any of the characters until the 8th episode I think.

Band of Brothers is just great film.

BOB by far. It has the continuity that a Company provides, regardless of it's starting and ending timelines of WW2. It felt like a more tightly told story of it's characters, one where there episodes flowed, despite some individual focus on say Eugene Roe, Lewis Nixon, etc..

The Pacific was too short a series given the grand scope of the full theatre of war that it attempts to cover, wasn't ambitious enough in series length in terms of episodes. Thus is snippets and small stories that felt too abbreviated, and episode to episode sometimes felt awfully choppy. Also felt like too small a series, based upon Sledge, Leckie, Basilone, and Snafu, where everyone else in many of the shots were basically 'extras' on the set.

I need to read the books, because BOB left me satisfied, where as Pacific left me wanting about four or five more episodes, to tie all the different theatres of fighting, and some of their more limited and/or overlapping characters together.

BOB felt like a five course dinner..Pacific felt like Tapas.

I'm not reading this thread, but if anyone said "The Pacific" was better than BoB, please go back and edit your post.

I've always wanted to watch the pacific, and generation kill, but haven't been able to. My grandfather was in the pacific, and I've seen tons and tons of pictures he has and he handed down to me a japanese officer's sword he brought back.
BoB will be very hard to top, for a variety of reasons, but I'm still intrigued and want to see the pacific.

BoB

Spiers: "The only hope you have is to accept the fact that you're already dead. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you'll be able to function as a soldier is supposed to function: without mercy, without compassion, without remorse. All war depends upon it."

Band of Brothers easily. It was more cohesive in the story line following the same group from basic training to war's end. Pacific was great visually and did a good job capturing the brutality of the Pacific theater but you never got truly involved in the characters. I almost feel it would have been better to just use different characters from island to island and just do more of a documentary of each battle.

I wish they would have interviewed vets the same way they did in BOB

Eugene Sledge passed away...

I think Robert Luekie is still alive, or maybe he just doesn't want to talk about it...

Sydney Phillips and R.V. Burgin were both interviewed throughout the series.

BoB was more coherent obviously following one company, but I thought The Pacific did a fantastic job of showing the savagery of the island hopping campaigns, something that BoB didn't really touch on as much in the ETO.

If they would have stuck with one battle for The Pacific, say Iwo Jima or Tarawa it would have been a bit better.

I enjoyed The Pacific a bit more, simply because I don't know as much about the war in the Pacific as I do about the war in Europe.

two very different movies about two pretty much very different wars

BoB is better, but it's stupid to compare one against the other like they're supposed to be close to the same thing.

It's not even in the same universe.

The difference is that BoB was based upon one excellent book by an author who knew how to piece together a story for the readers of today to follow. The Pacific was based on several books and lacked the narative that set the Ambrose book apart.

You can read the BoB book and see how each episode of the series followed the book.

I give the slight lean to BoB. But I feel like it's greatest strength is also potentially it's greatest weakness - the narrative that was neatly fit to the story. I know that makes it more digestible and more "movie like"...but does that make it more authentic? I don't think so. And I care about the authenticity of these projects.

The Pacific, to me, tried to give you much more of a sense of the randomness and haphazard nature of real war - you don't get to rely on a narrative to comfort you. Random shite happens. People get blown up. You get deployed to a new faceless shithole of a jungle island, etc.

After reading the Leckie book, I was actually annoyed at the narrative the filmmakers simply added to the Melbourne episodes. It wasn't necessary.

Leckie's book is really good. He actually has quite a lyrical way of writing.

Sledge is not as good of a "writer", but I enjoyed his book even more. It really takes you to some desperate places, particularly on Pelilieu.

Interesting fact...Saving Private Ryan was loosely based on a group of 4 brothers, the Nilands. One of them fought with the 101st through Normandy until they were pulled back to England and he was sent home.

Disagree. The production on Pacific was far greater than anything on Band of Brothers.

with that said, BoB is still better.

Seriously? I honestly couldn't even finish the Pacific, mainly because of my high expectations after Band of Brothers. It is defintiely not in the same leauge.
