Reason #10264 that Seinfeld is the greatest

Agreed. Seinfeld bowed out while on top of the ratings and the quality had not slipped at all, extremely rare and you gotta give him props for not just cashing in and churning out another 5-6 seasons of mediocre episodes.

Sons of Anarchy
Should have stopped after year two, and started back at some point. They lost me when the baby was taken to Ireland.

No, they really lost me at the final episode of season two, when they let the bad guy go. That ending, combined with the shark jump of the baby kidnapping, and the nurse participating in a murder, is when they lost me.

It was must watch TV through the first season, and 12 episodes of season two.

Was coming in to post this.

Friends had a decent finale but the final 2 seasons made the main cast pretty much a caricature of themselves.

What show didn’t? I guess you could argue Seinfeld but even it was past it’s peak (though I guess not ratings-wise). What show was still at its peak creatively when it ended?

The Simpsons. I love early Simpsons, but I haven't watched an episode in 10 years other than DVD's of the good old shows (back off, I got the DVD's in the mid 00's).

Prime Simpsons is unbeatable. What's going on now is something else.

Dexter
Californication
Weeds
Ray Donovan (Current)
Nurse Jackie

...pretty much anything that showtime puts out

Always thought M*A*S*H hung around a few seasons too long. Once Hot Lips became one of the boys

The first show I thought of when I saw the thread title.

I would add Buffy the Vampire Slayer to the list. They had the perfect series finale at the end of season 5... then kept the show going for two more horrible seasons.

ER- dragged on for way too long.

Could’ve ended it in season 11 with Carters’ farewell.

Good answer.

There were a few episodes in the later seasons that were good, but by the time Anthony Edwards left, the show was not nearly as good.

HIMYM

Didn’t hang on too long. Where this went wrong was the creator decided that his “I knew it all along” ending was more important than the character development that organically occurred during the show.

Entourage (ran out of ideas and started focusing on the characters nobody cared about)

The Hills (got too silly)

The Office (should’ve ended when Michael left)

Survivor (overplayed, too predictable)

Bachelor/Bachelorette (was enjoyable when a celebrity type was cast as the main person (Jesse Palmer, Byron Velvick, etc). Now is just recycled losers nobody cares about.

Almost every show hangs on too long. How many shows really need more than 4 or so seasons to tell their story?

Law and Order: SVU. It's now Mariska Hargitay's virtue signalling platform and is no longer entertaining.

Only two that come to mind at this point are Parks & Rec and Breaking Bad. I'm sure there are a few more some people could spin up though
