What the Hell Is It About ‘Star Wars’ That Makes Us All Crazy?

“Star Wars” is a strange phenomenon that turns everyone into toxic nerds with an unhealthy obsession.

“Star Wars” occupies a fairly unique place in our culture: it may be the only thing in pop culture that almost all of us generally like.

While it’s impossible for anything to be truly universal — there’s always going to be the odd person who has never seen any of the movies — “Star Wars” I think serves as the collective cultural touchstone for us. It’s the one thing that kinda gives us all a good feeling when we think about it. That phenomenon crosses pretty much every boundary — age, political affiliation, other general interests don’t matter. We all are pretty much just into “Star Wars.” It’s like some kind of safe space for us as a society. “Star Wars” is home. It’s a part of us and it will never let us down even while it’s constantly doing just that. It also makes us crazy.

I think maybe at this point liking “Star Wars” is such a subconsciously exhausting endeavor that we’ve simply given up on worrying about whether these movies are actually good. Things may be improving somewhat — even though last year’s “Rogue One” got very positive reviews, people seemed more willing to complain about it or outright dislike it. The standard unbridled enthusiasm wasn’t there, and neither was the general reflexive compulsion to defend it when it would be criticized. I don’t think we have a capacity for apathy toward “Star Wars,” though. If we ever stop feeling incredibly generous toward the franchise it’ll be because we all decide to hate the thing. It’ll be a complete heel turn, not a gradual change.

Lucas did his best to make us hate the franchise and then sold out. I mean he made the thing but really did his best to sabotage his legacy.

The fact that people still care so passionately about a franchise in which only the first two films are really good is pretty amazing.

I don't know but I can't believe the lack of action on this board with TLJ less than a week out

I guess people have gone dark about it, trying not to get spoiled

I’m not going to really have time next weekend to see it, but I’m going to make it happen just because I don’t want it to get spoiled.

That’s what I’m trying to do. I’ve only seen the latest trailer like twice (one because it played in the theater) and look away anytime I see it on TV.

Plus there are posters coming in here posting about the leaks not giving a single shite, so there’s that as well which is why people are not posting on it.

Its this weird self fulfilling prophecy. We all like it cause we all like it. And its main stream enough the regular bros can like it. And theyve made enough spin off universe building shite that nerds can worship it without feeling like theyve lost their little fortress of nerditude.

The author is wrong when she says it turns “Everyone” into toxic nerds.

The truth is it turns toxic nerds into toxic nerds.

Let’s call something for what it is, and not lump everyone in it.

There are Star Wars fans, and then there are Star Wars fans who attempt to possess Star Wars for themselves. And when it doesn’t go their way, they lash out at it.

Not everyone is like this.

I have. I had to disconnect from Facebook today because of a random TV Spot that aired and had a seminspoiler towards the end.

I've kept myself relatively clean for this one while in The Force Awakens I was watching and reading everything

As a kid that saw Star Wars at the theater when it came out I'd say this is not true.

The prequels and the "what could have been" may have forever taken the wind out of the sails for me.

It's because the Original movie ignited your imagination as a kid and even for many adults. The worlds and characters felt real. Then they did the impossible and the sequal ESB was even better.

Because the story is so much deeper than people give it credit for. Its about family and the struggle related to it. Even despite, as molsusports mentioned, that only two of them are 'good' is nothing short of remarkable. Thats a testament to the idea itself along with the endless possibility fantasy world it takes place in.

No, that would probably be Commercial-less TV, the iPhone, Kate Beckinsale, McDonald's fries, Phoebe Cates coming out of a pool, John Wayne movies, Pringles and Lesbian porn.

I was born in 1976 and have loved Star Wars movies all my life. I don't get as excited about them as I used to but I'll still be there opening weekend.

As much as I try, my wife hates Star Wars. Maybe she’s the only outlier in the galaxy, but whoever wrote this article didn’t interview my wife.

It sucks cause I want her there midnight showing next Thursday but it ain’t happening. I’ll crawl into bed around 3:30 am with a grin on my face while she drooling puddles and snoring thinkin about Madea Christmas
