Austria - and Salzburg, in particular - completely ignored that film at the time. Of course now they make a lot of money with Sound of Music tours and souvenirs. I saw it with my parents as a child and it bored me to tears (and sleep). But Julie Andrews was a generational talent, no doubt.

Apocalypse Now.. too fricking long.

I had two thoughts when I read this, one, why not just refer to it as Apocalypse Later then, and two, how can you say it is too long when you’ve never seen it? Surely you don’t look at the runtime of a movie and decide if its length is acceptable? Some stories take longer to tell than others is how I look at it.

But then again I’ve seen Apocalypse Now and never knew its length. I just can’t wait to see it again

I haven’t seen many old time classic movies like Casablanca or Citizen Kane. Just don’t appeal to me.

It's like Gone with the wind. It seems long but when you watch it, it moves pretty fast. Before you know it, you are 2 hours in when you think it's less than an hour.

This thread gets posted every few months and it’s interesting how many posters will come to the Movie/TV board and pat themselves on the back about not seeing some of the best known and/or critically acclaimed movies of all time. The Godfather, Star Wars will be mentioned often.

Speaking of which, I've never seen Star Wars or The Godfather.

I haven't seen any of these either.

And surprisingly they're the only ones in this thread so far that I haven't seen. Not counting Godfather 3 which doesn't really exist.

Godfather II, Citizen Kane, Dr. Zhivago, Apocalypse Now, When Harry Met Sally, Once Upon a Time in America, Pale Rider, Seven Samurai, Cinema Paradiso, Das Boot, Metropollis, and Lives of Others.

I’ve seen almost all of the top 100 on IMDB. Those were ones I found combined with my own list.

When my oldest was a Jr we made it a goal to knock out all the greats.

Interestingly, both of my kids’ favorite movies at 20 and 17 are both Good Will Hunting. Hard to argue with it at that age.

The Sound of Music is an all time great movie. Julie Andrews was fantastic, the songs were great, the opening magnificent and on and on.....

It's difficult to understand how a movie lover wouldn't want to see it and also appreciate it.

Miles and miles above 99% of Hollywood drivel these days.

Would guess the majority under 40 have no clue who Julie Andrews is

I’ve never seen Lonesome Dove even though I’ve wanted to for thirty years.

Also, I love the LotR trilogy but haven’t seen the extended versions.

i mean i had 2 years with a kid with a job and playing sports to knock out 100s of movies.

From memory we saw:

Matrix, Godfather, LA Confidential, Alien, French Connection, Braveheart, Departed, se7en, Fight Club, Dead Poets Society, Usual Suspects, Every Tarantino movie, Arrival, Interstellar, Prestige, Lawrence of Arabia, 2001, Rear Window, Psycho, Gladiator, Shawshank, Saving Private Ryan, 1917, Crazy Stupid Love, Nice Guys, Blade Runner and 2049, We Were Soldiers, Passion of the Christ, 12 Angry Men, Forrest Gump, TGtB&tU, Unforgiven, Whiplash, AHX, Casablanca, Momento, Good Will Hunting, Heat, and a few more i'm sure i'm missing.

In the middle of that we're watching whatever family things (marvel, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings) that we're having to do with my wife and younger son.

it wasn't from lack of trying.
