The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly followed closely by Once Upon a Time in the West.

The Proposition is an excellent recent western.

The best western is Lonesome Dove. The best movie that falls within the western genre is The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence.

So good, but so dark. Hard to watch a few scenes. Great movie. Feel the same way about Unforgiven. Young Guns has always been a fave.

Off topic a little, but what happened to the western? At one time it was the most popular type of movie in the country, now we're lucky if we get a decent one every five years.

Agreed. It sucks. The next screenplay I want to write is a noir-type Western

I agree but there's been a few gems recently...3:10, True Grit remake, Apaloosa, The Assassination of Jesse James, and I'll even throw in Django Unchained.

It is mostly critically reviewed as a western or spaghetti western.

I originally wouldn't think of it as a Western due to it's time period and location but then that would probably eliminate The Outlaw Josey Wales as a western as well and I'm not prepared to do that.

Give me a couple of six shooters and lever action rifles, throw in dudes wearing dusters and hats on horses...Western.

Big fan of westerns.

I like Rio Bravo, Chism, The Shootist, The Magnificent Seven, Tombstone, and Lonesome Dove.

....and I guess you could count Quigley Down Under?
