I’m thinking Poltergeist, although idk if it’s horror. It’s scary, though.

Poltergeist is more of a horror movie than any other type of movie.

My top 5:

1. Jaws
2. Halloween
3. The Exorcist
4. The Shining
5. The Thing

All excellent horror movies and all excellent movies, in general.

Go right to Cannibal Holocaust

or Cannibal Ferox.

The character "Mike" in that movie is gold.

Happy Death Day
It’s got a few decent decent jump scares, but nothing that’s going to give anyone nightmares. It has plenty of humor, similar to Scream. I feel like it’s the perfect film for a newbie.

My wife has never enjoyed horror movies.

She put on The Haunting of Hill House and thoroughly enjoyed the series.

Now she wants to watch other horror movies.

This is a good pick to bring someone into horror without scaring them off. Lights Out is another one that is quite a bit scarier but still mostly fun and light.

The Fog or Halloween. The originals not the remakes.

Devil's Rejects. The soundtrack goes a long way towards keeping people engaged despite the ugliness of the genre.

That is a great soundtrack. Songs work well for the action.

The Last House on The Left (1972)

This is far more of just a disgusting movie than a scary movie. I felt dirty watching it, and no exaggeration questioned my life choices. It's pretty much a snuff film of a couple of girls genuinely being sexually assaulted. From what I've read about it I get the impression that the actresses were pushed into doing stuff they didn't want to do.

I would recommend not ever touching that one.

The Thing is great though.

I thought Cabin in the Woods was a great movie, but it's more something that a long time fan of the genre would appreciate.
